Hondros College of Nursing - Input??????

Published

I am actively looking into Nursing Schools in the Cincinnati Area. I am starting the application process at Hondros and was wondering if anyone had any feedback about their program, good, bad or indifferent. I know its a relatively new program but they have recently receieved their final approval so Im assuming they have worked out the kinks that were reported in blogs posted early last year.

I would appreciate any feedback you may have.

Thank you!!

Hi all,

I am about to start my 4th quarter of the LPN portion at the main campus. Our class started out with 66, we are down to 25. It is a very challenging program. My experience has been interesting. There are some really fabulous teachers, ESPECIALLY 3rd qtr. First qtr is 3 days a week (M,T,W), 2nd quarter is 3 days a week as well (if you take psychology online) and it is Thu & Fri. 3rd qtr is 2 days a week if you take your 2nd psychology class online, and it would be Tue and Wed (all day!). Clinicals are once on a thursday and friday one week, and a 12 hour saturday up in Marion. Med/Surg would be better with a better teacher at the helm, but I had to self-teach. My biggest gripe is the grading system. They equivilate a 92.99 being the same as an 86.00 which clearly is different. Either one of those grades is a B..ie, a 3.0 so it hurts your gpa if you end with a 92,, which is completely ridiculous.

The work is hard and it is VERY fast paced. 4th quarter will be 5 days a week for the entire Summer so that stinks, but it is worth it in the end. You move right on the the ADN as long as you pass the HESI. The practice HESI is pointless because they tell you it is just to give you an idea. Ive heard people doing very well on the practice and failing the actual, and vice versa.

The stress is tough, but support is key. I have 4 kids, but do not work. If you can swing not working (especially 3rd/4th qtr) I would highly recommend devoting the time to studying and your family. You will need them both!

Good Luck!

Hello all! momto4cuties, i see that your post was the most recent and it looks like your almost done with the program. I have a few questions for you and was wondering if you could give me some advice, I want to do their adn but see that you have to do the lpn portion first? Does their credits transfer to any other school besides indiana weslyan? Do they accept credits from community colleges? How easy is it to transfer right into their ADN portion? I will be traveling from cleveland to the columbus branch so I just want to know will this be a good investment! All the nursing schools in my area have such long waiting list, that I am willing to drive the 2hrs!!! Thanks for anyone who could give me any input on what I should do!!

From what I understand, SOME credits are accepted by Hondros, but not many. And as far as transferring credits out..HA! Not likely. Nobody seems to accept the credit from there, including teh schools they have articulation agreements with. Those just mean they will accept our degree or diploma (LPN) in order to continue on, but we willstill be required to fill in teh "gaps" of our education. Personally, many of us are not returning after the LPN because there are far better options for an LPN to ADN degree. For example, about 8 of us are already ready to attend Excelsior College. It is the only online approved college, at ALL, by the NLN. Others are going to Marion Technical after they receive their LPN It will only be 3 quarters using either option. For teh LPN though, you may also want to consider the Columbus School of Practical Nursing, or American Institute of Alternative Medicine for their options. Both good schools as well! Best of luck & I hope this helps a little!

Hey guys, i'll b attending hondros school of nursing, and after my Rn, transferring over to chamberlain to get my bsn. I have only 12 credits from my previous institution before going to hondros, its almost as if im going straight out of high school. So if i want to get into the rn to bsn program at chamberlain, would there be any additional requirement? i mean i'll have my ADN from hondros when im done.

My ultimate goal is to go for crna, do you guys know of anyone that has graduated from chamberlain and got into a crna program?

thank you!!

Honestly, would be cheaper and look better if you went to a different online school. Chamberlain will cost roughly $600/credit and they do 6 quarters (8 weeks each) to make it technically 3 semesters. I will be going on after Excelsior to UNC Chapel Hill's online program. Will look a heck of a lot better when I'm applying for CRNA programs (which is my plan too!) =) Just an opinion & suggestion. Best of luck in whatever you choose! =)

so did u go from hondros's lpn to excelsiors rn? and then ur gonna get ur bsn from unc chapel hill?

what if i were to finish my adn at hondros? i hear they'll b getting their nlnac soon. Also, wouldnt chamberlain accept their credits? what about schools that require u to specifically have just an adn to apply to their bsn program?

Yep, exactly my course. Only thing the Master will pay attention to is boards and when/where I got my BSN. I wont be putting on the application that I did UNC Chapel Hill online, jusat the school itself. I honestly think that will be a much better looking/faster/cheaper route for me. Im already in at Excelsior, I just havent taken my first exam. I know a few people from there and they said it was the best move they ever made, so after MUCH deliberation, I am really excited about this path!

so a lpn at hondros is about a yr, and so if i were to go over to excelsior, how long wud it take for me to get my rn? or how much longer? i know its online but dont u have to do any clinicals?

That depends on your study habits. It is 7 exams and then a 2.5 day in person clinical intensive (at the end). Most people take about a year to do it. The shortest Ive ever heard of is 7 months, longest being 14 months. Im aiming for around 10 months to complete it. Its $235/exam and then the intensive costs $1900. Catch is no fin aid allowed because its all online, and the fed gov doesnt give loans or grants unless at least 6 credits are in person. www.excelsior.edu is case you wanna check it out. =)

wow, thats super fast!! well good luck to you, and thank you for the information, i really appreciate ur help. btw, how did u like hondros? and when did u attend? if ur already an lpn, does that mean anything if u transferred to excelsior? or is it 10-14 months regardless?

i dont know if you know this or not, and i hate to keep bothering u with questions, but i can bridge from lpn to rn at chamberlain, did u ever try that route?
