Holmes Regional in Melbourne

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Graduate in May and planning on moving to Melbourne. Holmes Regional any good? I know they are a Magnet hospital, but what is the real scoop? I've been living in Maryland since 2001 after being in Alaska for 3 years (Army) so I haven't been to Florida in a while. What is an entry/new grad (RN) pay in Florida like? What is fair and what is poop? Thanks friends!

i passed my boards! yayyy!!! now all i have to do is wait for my florida license, which could take me like a couple more weeks. but im not rushing things. still consider myself an orientee, being new to the hospital and all that. i now do tech work on my own and sometimes i "shadow" an RN if there are enough techs/nurse aids on the shift. just last night, i gave and received my first report. hah! didnt do bad, i think...

has anyone been to the new wing yet? well, i have but we just had to go to the emergency diagnostic imaging dept, which is on the ground floor. we got lost in the maze of hallways! good luck in trying to find your way around. hehe..

congratulations on passing your boards! i've been gone for a while but i'm back.... the only recent big change to report is that i'm on my own finally... they gave me a push off the branch and flap, flap, flap, i was flying! they have started me with 3 patients... was bored to be honest... they were low acuity so i pretty much went around helping out answering lights... i work at night... well i'm up to 4 patients and doing well... a bad day will come some day so for now am just enjoying my good fortune. i'm physically used to working 12s now. my coworkers have been wonderful and serve as great resources!

thank you. i havent been here since my last post. good to hear that you're now on your own. feels liberating right? at least you can pace yourself and work on your own. no more following around to the pyxis room or hovering over your preceptor's shoulder while they chart...

im on a heavy floor and usually they give us 6 pts. last night, i got the whole package! whew! i usually go home at past 8 in the morning. and dont get to eat lunch even. talk about hard work. ehehe..but over all, i like the people on my floor. very friendly and helpful. and that is what matters to me.

have a good day! ;o)

hi everyone,

I live in Orlando, but Im considering Melbourne is a possible place to go when I finish. Im an LPN starting the RN bridge in a few weeks. Ive been an LPN for a year working in peds home health. For some reason I thought Id be more excited to go back to school as hard as I worked to get this, but I find Im actually dreading it lol. Maybe bc the new grad RN rates look like something I can find as an LPN in certain settings lol. I wanna see the money. SHOW ME THE MONEY!!! lol. I hauled orifice to get my pre reqs done this past summer, driving 45 minutes each way to Daytona Monday thru friday after 12 and 16 hr night shifts. I was so motivated then....hopefully my motivation comes back miraculously within the next few weeks....lol. Luckily the program Im going to at the local community college was placed online starting with the class that is graduating right now from January 06. So at least I can maintain my home health gig while I finish up. But Ill miss forming the friendships/bonds I did in LPN school. Ill only see ppl in lab or clinical and exams.

Anyway just wanted to say hi and introduce myself!

What are the starting wages for an RN in the Melbourne area?

hey there! i have only lived in melbourne for about 5 months. being to new to this country and all but so far, me and my husband like it here. are you considering holmes regional? anyway, starting rates (at this hospital that is) would be around $18-20 plus. i know a lot of nurses on my floor who live about an hour away from the hospital. so you're not alone...

good luck in your studies!

I am very interested in this because I though a beginning RN's salary would be higher than that. Just curious ... do you know how long would an RN stay at that salary level? ($18-$20)....

For example, what kind of raises do they get every year --- 5% or 6%?

Does their pay get bumped up after two or three years of experience?

Do you know how much the more experienced RNs make? (5 years, 10 years of experience)

Also, how much does it cost for the benefits roughly?

Thanks for any info you can provide!

busylady,

you and I are having the same reaction to these salary rates....lol. I was really thinking the pay rates would be at least $22-$24 an hour...that mor up my alley!) It makes me question getting my RN at all since one can make these rates just as easily as an LPN. It also makes me wonder why LPNs are looked down upon and what all the hooplaw is all about. :uhoh21: But Ive come this far, so I might as well follow through with it. If I hadnt taken all the pre reqs and already be accepted into the bridge program, I might have second thoughts about it. Its a lot more work for not much more pay. Im all about instant gratification, which is what I got by getting my LPN. Im glad the bridge program is online at Valencia....if I had to quit my job to go back to school, I probably wouldnt go thru the trouble. I wont work as many hours (I usually work 44-48, and Ill probably work 32-40 while in RN school), but at least I will still be able to work nearly full time.

I agree! I am pursuing nursing partly because I want to do good work and make a difference in someone's life. But the *money* is also a big motivation!

;)

I am not going to give up. I am definitely going for my LPN and probably my RN after that. It's going to be rough with my current full time job but I feel this is the only hope I have of ever increasing my income. I will wait until I graduate to decide which is more lucrative -- do the RN full time? Or continue teaching and do RN work on the side.

Like you, I am not looking forward to studying in my free time, but I see this as a positive move toward my long-term future because I simply can't continue to count only on teaching to pay my bills. Also, as a nurse you have tremendous job security. You will never ever have to worry about finding a job and that is really important as you get older.

Anyway, thanks to Bisayaispisyal for responding with info about Holmes salaries. I appreciate it! Good luck to all of us as we continue on our journey!

Im from merritt island, I will graduate from Florida Hospital College in April ( YEY! ) I was wondering since you guys have jobs as GN's at Holmes what the start rate you recieved? Im trying to weigh out if its worth the drive to Florida Hospital ( which i love so much ) if the pay is still the same as a closer hospital. Also , what is night shift differential? Thanks guys!!

sorry about the mix up. i know the pay is very low..but i failed to mention that i signed up with holmes under different circumstances. i come from another country and started working as a nurse tech. when i passed my boards, that was when they raised my salary to that level. but i guess it would be a different story if u studied here or had more experience. or if you were an agency or a travel nurse, i heard they get paid more. or if you go to the per diem pool too, you get more coz you dont get benefits. im not exactly sure how much the figures are but definitely its more than the figures i gave out previously.

i wish everyone well in their endeavors. happy new year!!!

Been out of the loop for sometime... The staffing ratio in my Telemetry MEDSURG floor is 5 patients per nurse for the most part. On rare occassions its 6:1.

Regarding pay and benefits, with benefits it is $19.00. Naturally, there are extras for night differentials and extra "certification" (for instance 75 cents more an hour for ACLS certification).

I work without benefits/per diem so it is $22.00 for the first six months on the floor then it goes up to $31.55 for day shift and $34.55 for night shift. To start of course...

24 paid holidays for those with benefits plus an additional 6 federal holidays.

Per diem people get the same amount of days off but are unpaid of course.

This is the pay that applies to a new nurse.

An experienced nurse friend of mine makes $25.00 with benefits so it all depends on your level of experience.

I hope this helps in making a decision.
