Hiring new grads

Does anyone know which areas in Canada (all provices) are hiring lots of new grads?

The short answer is NONE. No province is hiring LOTS of new grads. Some, like Alberta, aren't hiring any. It's a tough time to be coming into the workforce.

I'm from BC and its bone dry out here. I heard Sask was hiring and paying relocation in some places too.....

Otherwise, you can always check up north (nunavut, etc)..... might have luck up there.

According to one nursing job website the province with the greatest number of current job postings is Ontario, as to whether or not new grads will be hired into these advertised positions remains to be seen. Recession or not, there are usually unadvertised, low paying jobs for new grads in LTC in every province.

Two things:

nursing in the north isn't for new grads. You don't have the experience to fall back on.

LTC and Acute Care pay the same in Alberta and probably BC due to centralized unions for the RNs and LPNs.

You might find work in the private LTC/ADL industry. BUT those places are very customer service orientated.

Although, Nunavut is DESPERATE for nurses and wouldn't working up there give a new grad some experience?

It would, but it could also result in the nurse losing her license to practice. You can't be the only health care provider for hundreds of miles and not have enough experience to know when you're in over your head. It's an extreme amount of responsibility to work in isolated places like Nunavut. Many of the patients we see transferred to our hospital from points north are far sicker than they might have been if a more experienced person had been treating them and if they'd been transferred much sooner. New grads, IF they're hired to work up there, typically last a year or less. There is only one actual hospital up there, in Iqaluit; two smaller regional health centres, in Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay and community health centres in each of the Territory's smaller communities. Qikiqtani General in Iqaluit employs only about 50 RNs. In the smaller communities the nurses are expected to bring with them advanced nursing skills, including obstetrical skills, basic lab techniques, radiology skills, pharmacy training, transferred function medical abilities such as suturing, and advanced assessment skills, with specialty certifications like TNCC, BTLS, ACLS, PALS, ENPC and/or NRP highly desired. The new grad would be hard pressed to come up with all that.

Yep, but nurses from out west are heading home to the Maritimes. My friend's sister is about ready to retire in Great Falls and glad to be going.
