HFCC Winter '08 - Come on In

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

Hey everyone in the winter class of '08

I want say congrats to you all!!!! After my year long wait, I'm very exicted to start. See you all in orientation on Monday!

I got a really good stethoscope (Littman- which I recommend, if you can swing it. about $75.00), and a "pocket thing" with the bandage scissors in it, which will also hold your nail file & pens. It also comes with the little flashlight for your neuro checks. The SNA sold T-shirts last time, which were really cute, but I am not sure if the new ones are in yet. All kinds of stuff. The clipboards are cool because it has a calculator right on it, which you will need in clinical if you have to do a conversion for your meds.

I'm so excited for you guys! I can tell by your enthusiasm that you are really going to love it! :)

I did evenings, and I only did one complete bed bath, one IM injection & a couple of sub-Qs. I'm actually a little nervous about having a daytime one because I feel so far behind. We did alot of charting in the evening. From what the daytime group said, they did ALOT more than we did.

You feel far behind....I never did a complete bed bath or an injection!!!!! Our group got totally jipped, we were at an orthopedic hospital where most meds were IV or PO. When I talk to my other classmates, they definitely got the real experience. And it angers me cuz I think the first clinical is paramount for learning. That site has since been dropped.

I've been told to do PM Psych. I have med/surg first so I think I'll heed the advice about Psych. What's your schedule like?

Lucky for me even if my site does get jipped on injections I won;t be so worried...I was an MA for a while and I'm great at them haha. I loved injections they were the easiest thing in the world to me...I loved them even better than drawing blood even though I can do that well too.

Thanks for the info about the things available to buy.

Just an FYI...those spiffy blue uniforms seem HUGE when you try them on or hold them up to eyeball the size, but the suckers shrink a lot. If it seems too big, don't worry, it will be snug by the end of the semester. The white lab coats run big, and they DON'T shrink.

Oh - about the clipboards....there is so much tiny print on them, check yours to make sure they weren't smudged in the printing process. That info on them is valuable, and it's frustrating when you can't read it. Check it all out before you buy.

Oh - and those clinicals start at 6:50 a.m., earlier if you have a hard-core instructor.

I am doing psych first, but have no idea where or if I am AM or PM! Since I already did PM, I have a feeling that I will get AM. Oh well. I heard we get to go to court cases in the AM (if we are lucky) -- so we will see! :)

What is your schedule? If you have T/W clinicals, I know who your instructors are!

Hello there,

I am currently on the wait list and don't expect to be called until Winter 09. Do they ever call people early that you know of? I was also just a little curious if you could explain to me exactly how clinicals work? How many hrs/days a week, that kind of stuff. I work full time days right now and just need to get together a game plan for when the actual program starts. I'm very excited but nervous all at the same time!:lol2: :uhoh3:

Amy Beth which one were you? I met just an illusion...we were actually sitting by each other without realizing it!

Person who said they will be in winter 09 maybe (I forget your name) when did you get on the wait list? I was only on for 11 months...and I talked to a girl today who was only on the list since April but got in now. However sometimes it takes longer.

All right I'm off to drag in my millions of new books :) Woo hoo now I only have to buy a few more things and get retested in 4-6 weeks since I guess I never had the measles...and turn in my paperwork! (Well thats the 1st thing then everything else later)

So how was it?? My car was completely blocked in & I couldn't get out! :(

Amy, I am opposite- I have clinicals on Thurs-Fri. Hopefully, the teachers are good. I was looking through the module today. Yikes, we have to give an "oral" presentation!! I get so nervous speaking in front of a group sometimes. :)

I was the only one I know that liked him in my orientation!!!!!! Believe me, there will be times when u feel like u are losing your mind and you can't possibly get everything done and u will want to scream your head off! He does seem kinda weird but he's been counseling students for a very long time so I think what he says can be validated! U just might find yourself in the privacy of your own space trying these out - it feels very good!:lol2:

I was with the SNA (student nursing association) wearing a sweater, jeans and a black hat.

BTW - join the SNA, it's $10 and u get 2 pts. per class by going to the monthly mtgs and participating in an activity (nothing too time consuming)! And if for nothing else, it looks good on your resume! But the best reason to join is you get to meet the staff and other nursing students and no one can understand your life as a SN like another SN!
