This simply proves that people must look beyond the higher wages that other areas offer. The $40+ hourly wages that RNs in the San Francisco Bay area are earning might seem really appealing at the first glance, but the higher pay rates are overwhelmingly due to the nosebleed cost-of-living in that specific area.
Anyway, I love the link!

that's very reassuring. I wonder if they factored in the high property tax rates in their formula. The housing is very cheap when compared to other states especially california. But texas has hugh property tax rates. almost twice of what californians pay. But either way you get more house for the money in Texas.

Choose where you live wisely. If you are in the D/FW area, there are several towns with not-so-high tax rates, and some that could break the bank.

nursing is simply a great job to have; i just hope it stays that way for a long time because i have been hearing scary stuff about lay offs in the uk. there seem to be more nurses than their health care system can manage, and with the number of ppl trying to get into nursing school including myself in the usa,i hope we never get to face such a situation, at least not for a long time. :-)

Texas does have high property taxes, but there isn't a state income tax.
It has some awesome schools too.

I'd like to know what part of California has lower property taxes than I pay here in North Texas! I know there are many in Cali that are protected by Prop 13, but if you aren't, there's no way!
But even if our property taxes are a little higher than most, we have reasonable sales tax and no income tax. Our cost of living is sooooo much lower than Cali's.

My house in Texas is cheaper than the one in Cali, but now my property taxes are in the $3,000 range per year.
Ouch! My house was just apraised at $135,000 and my taxes are just under $1,900 here in N. Texas. But I don't pay city taxes, maybe that's why I don't see it.
My friend lives in North Richland Hills, in a house that was appraised at $114,000 and she pays $3,100 yearly in property taxes. Another friend lives in Saginaw, in a house that appraised at $118,000 and pays $3,100 in taxes.
