Hesi exit exams

Does anyone think this should be illegal? This was not in our student handbook nor did it state the 900 and above we must recieve in order to graduate. The school also states we fail the last course we took regardless of the actual grade we earned. THIS STAYS ON OUR TRANSCRIPT THAT WE FAILED A NRSG CLASS! WHEN THIS IS NOT THE CASE. They also are charging us a semesters worth of tuition for taking the hesi exam after unsuccessful tries of not passing with a 900 or above. This is not a separate class. Where is this money going? If we don't have to actually repeat the course, yet have to pay. I was done with school in October, but not able to sit for boards yet nor recieve my BSN in which I successfully completed all requirements for each course clinically and classroom. How can this be stopped? This is for the NCLEX to decide not a study guide for the NCLEX. Why should this determine my future of whether I become a prudent, successful, caring nurse that I know I would be?

And by the way, all the nursing faculty had to take this test themselves and a whopping 2 of them passed. These are all Masters Degree holding nursing instructors. Now is that food for thought or what?

My school requires a 900 for those graduating in May 2008. The kicker is last year (May 2007) the passing score was an 850 and of the 78 student who took it, only 17 passed. I know of people who took the HESI two years ago who still haven't passed. I want to know what was going through these peoples heads when the decided to raise that passing score after those dismal results.

When I started my program (Fall 2007), the required passing score was 850. I don't think they should be able to change that for my class. I think the new passing score should only be applied to the newer class, not that it should in applied at all.

Same thing happened at my school. The semester before we took the exit HESI, the passing requirement was 800. When it came our turn to take it, it was raised to 850. One of my best friends (who is brilliant as hell and even has a Masters in another health field) failed because of this change, and she has been prevented from graduating. Had she taken it only ONE semester earlier, her score would have been high enough to pass. And for those that I'm sure will argue the whole "well you knew about the requirement when you entered the program," yes we knew we had to pass an exit HESI to graduate, but no the requirement to pass WAS NOT 850 when we began the program. The exit HESI requirement also isn't in the student handbook OR the university's catalog. Not including the exit HESI requirement in writing in the handbook and catalog apparently gives them the right to change program requirements as they wish. The way these schools are using these tests to keep their students from their degrees and NCLEX is absolutely freaking ridiculous! Gosh! Can everyone tell how ****ed I am? And for anyone who's wondering, yes I passed, and yes I graduated. But, it's not fair that classmates were prevented from graduation and made to feel incompetent because of this test. Ok.......sorry about the rant.

HA! HA! yes i know. one of my instructors is actually one of the co-authors of hesi! now isnt that something and she gave me 2 wrong awnsers!

Not to mention some of the questions were ridiculous. One had something to do with your "scalp assessment" (which made me laugh) But the whole gist of the question was, your patient dyes her hair bright red....what do you expect the condition of her hair to be.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? Am I in cosmetology school? That question was inappropriate.

I believe IT! you know why? cause I had the exact same question! Did they just throw that in there for kicks or what??????? It is absolutley degrading!

Fortunately I got the awnser correct because I highlight my hair! cmon. My fiance who is an elevator mechanic ask me if he can get paid and he will contact HESI and give them some questions to give us!HA HA

The bigger question is who is the idiot who came up with this question? They could'nt have been a nurse!! Either that or they are just vain!

Hi everyone,

After reading all of your posting's I had to join allnurses.com and tell you all that I agree with everything that has been posted. The score that my school required to passed is 850. I have taken it twice and made 848 BOTH TIMES! They allowed me to walk with my graduating class (I graduated on Dec. 13 with a BSN), but they will not give me my degree and this confuses the heck out of the children's hospital that I'm currently working in. The hospital is confuse because they have no idea if they should classified me as a graduate nurse or not, considering that I walked during graduation. So currently, I'm temporary umeployed, sitting at home waiting for the next HESI test, which is suppose to be schedule on Jan. 31. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get through the next HESI?

I would be LIVID.

I just studied the saunders book. I focused on pediatrics because I had quite a bit of that on my first HESI.

It's almost like you can't prepare for it.

I agree with the posts. The HESI should be used only for assessment purposes to help the instructors identify weak areas. It should not determine whether I graduate or not. I am in my last term of classes and clinicals and am required to pass the HESI in order to graduate. There are 28 people in my class and half of them took the assessment HESI the other day and only 1 passed. My group takes it tomorrow. Did any of you have to pay above and beyond your tuition to take the HESI? We did. $48 a piece for the assessment and the exit. Unfortunately I do not know what the score is to pass yet. Good luck to all those that have to take it.

Yep. Our exit HESI was about the same price as yours. Of course we also had to take HESI at the end of fundamentals, pharm, psych, medsurg, peds, & ob. We paid a total of about $225 in addition to tuition and fees for the HESIs. Of course if you failed the exit HESI on the first try, you had to pay an additional $50 for the second chance. Your school probably requires an 850 or 900 to pass. Those are the acceptable (850) and recommended (900) scores according to HESI. I wish you luck.

We took the Hesi the last day of school.

The grade didn't matter, though, and our instructor was mad that we even had to take it.

Her only words were only "the Hesi doesn't matter! Study for your final exam!'

The final exam counted for 60% of our grade, and if you didn't pass that exam, you didn't pass, so we studied for the final exam.

We were given the final exam then went right into the computer lab to take the Hesi. I was stressed out about the exam I had just taken, because there were some weird questions on it.

Had I have known that I passed the exam with an 86, I may have been more relaxed while taking the HESI. But I didn't know that.

When we logged onto the Hesi website, there were technical issues, so it actually required over an hours worth of downloads to take the test. Needless to say, we were all ready to get that test over with.

Then the wording of the questions was weird. I had been studying lab values and disease processes, etc., and then I got questions about where the center of gravity is on an elderly person. This was something we had never discussed in class, not even in geriatrics. There were lots and lots of odd questions and I didn't care for the test.

I got 800, and was depressed for days, even though it didn't affect my graduation.

It knocked my confidence level down several notches, and I am studying much harder for the NCLEX, which is a good thing.
