Hep C needle sticks

Hey everyone,

Great site you have here. I was stuck by an insulin needle last week, after using it on a Hep C+ client. I've read almost everything I've found on the internet re: Hep C and needles sticks. I know my odds are good. I've called the hotline. I still have a few wks before I get tested.

At this point, knowing what I know, the only thing that would make me feel better is hearing stories here, who has converted, who hasnt... and the stick details.

I know this subject has been beat to death, but I'm a new nurse, semi young, and pretty nervous. So any replies would be appreciated.

isis im sure you will be okay--i'll keep my fingers crossed:D

I do have a question for all that have been"stuck"---I am a nursing student and have never given an injection---I have been a Phlebotomist full-time for the past 6 years and have never been "stuck"--im just wondering if injections are more difficult/dangerous to give then drawing blood-----im getting alittle worried now, I was kinda counting on that to be one of my advantages in school!?!:o

i don't think that giving injections are more prone to sticking than withdrawing blood, you just have so many injections and the slips are what stick out in your mind

as for the hep c we have had a lot of hiv and hep c and b and the regular amount of sticks plus because of the mental status of some of the residents we also had bites and salvia in the eye and none of the nurses or cnas were infected

good luck

Well everyone, it's been 6 wks since the stick wed. I'm gonna get the test done tomorrow b/c i'm not sure if the walk in clinic I have to go to per my facilities protocol will be open on 1/1. Anyone wanna share more needle stick stories, with good or bad results while I wait for mine?

jessegirl, out there?

Hey,

Sorry I have not been on here in forever. Well I went for my first test since my baseline on Monday. The nurse in employee health said it would take a week or longer to receive the test back because they send it off. She says it is a really sensitive test, so we will see. Keep your fingers crossed!! Have you heard anything yet?

Just got my quantitative HCV RNA test back... didnt get the details but was told I do not have it! YAY. Such a relief! I've been busy planing a new life assuming I would be HCV+. Next will be the RIBA, and that should be it.

The guy whos needle I stuck myself with happen to come in to visit today, on the day I got my results of all days!! He had been DC'd about a month ago.

I'm glad I learned to give needle 110% attention with a subQ needle instead of a 14g. I pricked myself in 3 diff spots dont forget. Good luck!

That's so great!! Congratulations! I will be looking forward to my negative results as well! I will keep you updated!

Isis,

Got my results today and they are negative!!!! Thank God! I go back on February 27th for a follow up!

I am a NAII and senior year nursing student. Tonight, I accidentally stuck myself with an 18 gauge needle while filling blood culture bottles. The patient is on hemodialysis and tested positive for Hep. C. I go tomorrow to get my baseline drawn. As you all were in the beginning, I am freaking out. It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one who has went through this and reading that your results came back negative is comforting. This is a stressful situation and you can never imagine how stressed out you are until it happens to you.

I am a neurodiagnostic tech in the OR running mostly EMG. I got stuck with a solid bore EMG needle (not sure the gauge) from a HEP C+ patient. I went for my baseline testing, all came back -, and will go in for my 6 week antibody test later this week. I was wondering how people on this forum were able to get RNA testing dont that reveals results sooner than 6 months or 1 year. Does anyone know the price comparison? Im freaking out and the sooner I can put my mind at ease the better!:uhoh3:

i got needle stick by insulin syringe with + Hep C patient last week. I'm so depressed and nervous.. what's worse is that my husband seems changing to me. =(

I am a second career, second year nursing student working as a PCA. I got my first needlestick from a 69 year old women. Rapid HIV was negative but I found out the next day that she was Hep C positive. I broke down in the Employee Health office with my manager.

I know the chances are slim, but I am scared. I have a husband and a toddler who depend on me. How could this have happened to me? How will my life change if I convert to positive? My marriage? Future children?

I cannot stop crying.

I know exactly how you feel I just got stick last night from an insulin needle from a hep c pt. Luckily the hiv test was negative. im a new grad just 1 month into orientation and I just felt so dumb ugh. This thread is definitely comforting I hope in the next few weeks everything will be ok.
