Hep C needle sticks

Hey everyone,

Great site you have here. I was stuck by an insulin needle last week, after using it on a Hep C+ client. I've read almost everything I've found on the internet re: Hep C and needles sticks. I know my odds are good. I've called the hotline. I still have a few wks before I get tested.

At this point, knowing what I know, the only thing that would make me feel better is hearing stories here, who has converted, who hasnt... and the stick details.

I know this subject has been beat to death, but I'm a new nurse, semi young, and pretty nervous. So any replies would be appreciated.

Hello, I too just recently stuck my self with a sq needle that i used to give heparin on a hep c patient. Its my first time being stuck. My anxiety level is off the roof right now. Im also 4mths pregnant so its hard not to freak out so much. I would like to hear more stories about anyone else that has had incident similar to mine and outcomes. Im aware that theres a 98% chance that i will be ok. But would feel so much better to hear anyone elses stories. This is all fairly recent. My 6 wks check up is in mid Aug.

nursie12,

The chances are SO low with sc needles. After my stick I stuck myself a few times in the tummy with new sc needles to see how many times there was even blood on the needle. 1:10 times I could see a tiny tinge. Nothing anyone can say will ease your fears, but I will bet anyone who has had a Hep C needle stick and is waiting on results will be negative.

The risk comes with large bore, and obviously if it hits your vein/artery etc.

PM me if you wanna make a bet :)

I guess the only reason i freaked out is because i poked my self on the side of my thumb and I believe it was like a capillary stick because i bled almost immediately after it happened... I think that if i had not bled then i wouldnt be as worried....Thanks so much for your reply!
