Im new to this forum.. But can anyone in Northern Cali or Sacramento help me on where I can go to to find OPEN BIO (A&P I, and Micro) classes for fall???
I have my Molecular and Cell Bio BS (1997) and have taken Anatomy/Physiology, but most RN programs require HUMAN A&P!~ Oh, well, i love that stuff anyway and have had lots of anatomy from my previous job.. BUT IM HAVING A HELL OF A TIME FINDING OPEN CLASSES for fall '08.
Im moving to Sac -from Chicago-next week (because of my Fiances transfer. Im taking my Nutrition and Human Development and SOC this summer and have the A&P I and II, and Micro left. BUT I CANT SEEM TO GET INTO A CLASS! I don't know no. cali very well so im at a loss as to where to go for help besides Sac State who's full for those classes.
If I have to wait till spring to take these, it will push off my ANP II untill summer and that delays my applications!
I came from surgical/device sales and cant do that job and school at the same time, so I'm just wanting to do what i can ASAP and get into a program! Other wise what do i do in the FALL???
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
I'll be new to SAC, in my early 30's and feel totally lost!!!
HELP????
Being from the Sac area and having already completed my pre-reqs....your best bet is to get enrolled in another class so the next time you will get priority registration. It is stiff competition just for the pre-reqs. I "heard" from another student who heard from a teacher --obviously can't verify the accuracty of this statement--that there was a good couple of thousand students trying to get into the pre-req science classes.
Best of Luck to You.
I'm in San Francisco, and all of the science classes fill up quickly. However, I haven't seen a teacher turn down students who want to add. Now, they may not be able to add you on the first day, but usually by the 3rd or 4th class enough people have dropped and they will add you--but only if you attend class regularly until that point.
The other thing that might be an option is to put yourself on the wait list. I have been on the wait list for several classes, and have always managed to get in before the class actually starts.
If you're going to be in the Sacramento area, there are lot of community colleges: American River, Los Rios, Sac City, Woodland.....just google it.
Also, sometimes it's easier to get in at the smaller colleges. They may have less classes, but they have less students. My best advice is to pick a college and add yourself to a wait list. Show up on the first day and ask to add.
Good luck!
Does anyone else have any experiences with adding into classes in No. Cal, or can say how many people tried to add into their science class the first day? I'm going to try for one this coming semester and I'd like to get an idea of what the first night will be like. It's a night class.
In my experience, evening classes are the most packed. I tried to add into a popular teacher's night Anatomy class last fall and there were 30 students there to add. The next night there were about 12 that came back in hopes of snagging a spot. At this school, however, there were only 2 Anatomy classes in the evening which increased demand dramatically.
Good luck and hang in there! I recommend talking with the teacher to see if he/she also adds on the 2nd and 3rd nights of the class. Fewer and fewer people will continue to come back and you might get an opportunity to add then.
I agree - just show up at the class and try to get in. I got in to full Anatomy and Physiology classes this way, and only had to try at the one school I usually attend (Woodland Community College).
People tend to take the shotgun approach to registering for classes - they sign up for a large number, then end up dropping the ones that aren't a priority. Or they decide not to go to school, or think they can blow off the first day. Or they get scared back and don't come back to the second or third class. And people on the waitlist often give up hope and don't show up. So just give it a try :)
The thing that's so irritating is how many students end up dropping several or many weeks through the course or who end up giving up, taking the F, and then repeating the class.:angryfireI know exactly what you mean at my cc in san pablo my anatomy class started out with about 40 students on the last day we only had 26 students left. I had been trying to get into the science class for the past year but I could only take nite classes and by the time my registration date came up the classes would be full. So after quitting my job and going to school full-time I was finally was able to get into the anatomy class.

I've taken evening courses for the past two years, and they're difficult to get into, especially the A&P ones. I took A&P I at Cosumnes and the teacher added maybe 3-5 students, not many, since their classrooms are smaller and not very much lab space. The good thing is there are a lot of campuses in the Sac area... Cosumnes, American River College, Sacramento City College, Folsom Lake College, Sierra. When I get my registration date & time, I sign up the earliest possible minute. Even thenI don't always get in the class I want. This Fall semester I signed up, same way I always do, and I was #18 on the wait list for American River's A&P II class (Fri nite/Sat morn). And today I'm still on the wait list (#9). I was hoping I would have been in the class by now, but no such luck. There are still 2 wks until class starts so hopefully I'll move up faster.
For the OP, I would pick a couple classes that you'd like to get into (day classes I bet are a lot easier), email the teachers and then you'll get more of a sense how many students they're willing to add, and then do the cattle call. Good luck to you!

Well, I kept checking the class roster and praying and checking and praying and someone actually dropped the class I wanted and I was able to catch their spot before anyone else :) Chabot doesn't do waitlists, luckily. So now I get to take a hybrid anatomy class that only meets once every two weeks with the rest online, whereas all of the other anatomy classes around here meet twice a week. Woo.

If it's not too far to travel - get Dr. Scott for Micro. He is awesome! Just twice a week - maybe you could drive down. I would.
