Hi im a newbie here but I'm a big fan of this online community. I would want to commend the moderators and threaders of allnurses.com for providing a support system for every aspiring successful nurses.

I'm 22 years old, a Filipino pediatric nurse who is currently working in a government hospital in Manila. In my second year as a staff nurse, I finally took my time and efforts to start my NCLEX application. I am not yet a CGFNS or IELTS passer so it's still a long way for me, I guess. Since my mother is currently working in California for 8 years now, I really wanted to go to Califonia and applied for my NCLEX there.I sent my application last May 16, 2007 until now, with fingers crossed, no response yet from California BON. By the way, I have no U. S Visa eventhough my mom's working there, since she had no Green Card also.

While waiting for my eligibility, decided to study Saunder's (Comprehensive) and I'm on Chapter 16 already in spite of my work schedule. I made my own study schedule so I could read all chapters just before I enroll in a review center. I got the idea of reading saunder's from this site's tips.

I would want to ask everyone of the following queries?

  • What review center could I enroll in, and what month do you think I could enroll in? My schedule is too tight, leaves are applied way, way ahead.
  • Is it okay to use other's credit card for paying the application exam?
  • Where do you think I could take my NCLEX? I know there is a Manila testing center , but what are the benefits and risks as compared to hongkong?
  • What travelling agencies could I contact with in regards to hongkong exam? How much in US dollars will it cost a hongkong exam plus disneyland trip?
  • I do not want to be recruited by an agency, because that required me to be binded by a specific hospital in california. I really wanted to work in mattel's children hospital-ucla, children's hospital-la, so i decided to process my papers independently. What are the step by step processes I should undertake, when applying for a VISA. Please share with me your experiences.
  • Who immigration attorney to contact?
  • What are the requirements for VISA SCREEN. How much in minimum will it cost me.

To Suzanne, Thank you for your tips.

To everyone, please do help me.

Thanks

check out the international forum and also the nclex forum (that can be found by clicking the student tab at the top of the page)

for visas screen fees you need to check out cgfns website and fees are posted on there.

doesn't matter where you take the exam, it is the same but may be cheaper taking it in manila than paying to go to hk (couple of threads both here and international on hk and prices)

if you want to go direct hire (straight to one hospital) they need to offer you a job and usually their lawyers do the immigration process. green card is the one you are going for. even if your mother was a us citizen it can take several years for her to petition you for gc much better doing it yourself with a hospital. be aware that the process will take a few years and curently retrogression is on so no visas. plenty of info also in the international forum on this

good luck

Please read the Primer that is found on the International Forum. You have applied to CA BRN for licensure as an RN, you did not apply to take the NCLEX exam. There is no such thing as that. To be able to sit for the exam it requires that you get permission from a state to be able to do that.

If your mother has been working in the US for eight years, and has no green card; what type of visa is she on?

You cannot apply for a visa to work in the US, you need to be petitioned by an employer.

The NCLEX exam is the same no matter where you will write it. You will get the same questions if you write it in HK, PI, or even London. It is computerized and gives you the questions based on how you answered the previous ones.

It takes about four months on average before you will get approval from the BRN to sit for the exam. I would focus on passing the NCLEX exam, as well as the English exams before doing anything else. Without that being done, there is not a way to get an employer to petition you.

Hope that this helps.
