I am a LVN with 2 years of experience. I have been a charge nurse at my clinic for 1 1/2 years. I just got offered an Case Management assistant position telephonic at home, for 3,000 more a year. I also got offered a position at Methodist making 2.00 less. But I heard that Methodist is really good place to work for. I need to make an decision by Monday. Both orientations start June 13th! What to do, stay at home or go to Methodist????

Ultimately the decision is yours of course, but I would base my decision off of my bills first, then my longterm goals. If I need the money or just cant afford to drop down two dollars, then I would choose the Case Management position, but if money wasnt an issue and Methodist ( which I am guessing is a hospital) offers more things that meet my longterm goals, then I would choose it, because money is everything, so long as you have enough to live comfortably.

I've been working from home for an insurance company for the past six months and prefer it to performing bedside care.

You do not say what type of position you were offered at Methodist. There's no way I'd take a pay cut to work at Methodist for the privilege of busting my butt, slinging bedpans, and dealing with rude families who displace their anger onto nursing staff.

$2.00 an hour less? That equals $4160 per year, calculating Full time 52 weeks year is about 2080 hours per year. I would not take a pay cut when I could work at home for more money.

You should also consider the $ value of your benefits.

Do both jobs offer health insurance? What do you pay for your health insurance at each company. What is your deductible, co-pay, and out-of-pocket maximum at each. If one has a $500 deductible and the other has a $3000 deductible that is a lot of money each year if you use your insurance much. Are you Drs in-network in both plans.

Do both employers provide dental, vision, life, and long term disability insurance? How do those costs and benefits compare

Do both jobs have a 401K or other retirement plan. How long until you are vested in each plan.

Does the employer make a matching contribution to your retirement? If both employers contribute 3%, that means the employer paying you a higher salary is contributing more to your retirement than the one paying less.

Also consider that raises are usually a % of your base salary. If both employers give you a 3% raise after one year, the one paying you more to start will be giving you a bigger raise than the one paying you less initially.

Regarding the work-at-home position - Do you have the self discipline to be "at work" even though you are at home or would you be tempted to put a load of clothes in the washer, visit with the kids, etc. while you are supposed to be working. Will you be happy working alone all day, or do you need to be around your professional peers?

Wow! thank you so much for that vital information. That helps me with making my choice.

OP should try working from home. If she doesn't like it... she can always find a job slinging bedpans.

We are all professionals , and no discipline is needed. I have plenty of time to do a load of laundry, start dinner, etc. and my productivity in the top 10%.
