When answering prioritizing question, what is the oder, do you go ABC, then Maslow, then the nursing process, please let me know thanks. Do you go all the stages of Maslow before thinking the nursing process?

Other posters can help me out on this too. From my understanding, you have to go with physical before psychosocial so first Maslow.
Then you have to figure out what the question is asking and if you figure out that you can use Nursing process or ABC's.
I find that if a client complains of a symptom in the stem and that's it, then you assess (using the Nursing process).
If the question gives you the assessment such as s/s, lab values and you don't need validation or more assessment- you implement.
It really depends on what the question is asking. When you find that you can't use Maslow, then go to Nursing process and ABC's.
I hope this helps and maybe another poster can make things a little clearer for you and me.

I always thought it was the ABC's first. If it is not a problem with airway, breathing or circulation then you would proceed to Maslow's Heirarchy. Urgent physiological needs come first, then safety. If anyone else learned this differently, please chime in!

It all depends on what the question is asking, also on N-clex they will not just say a person has an "airway problem", but they may say "fringed or burns nares" indicating a airway problem. Do u get it?

I was taught you first assess using the ABC's, then safety. But if your pt is laying beside a burning car you have to move to a safe area before you use ABC's...you just assessed the area was not safe. I think you have to read the question.....much like BlessedOne explained. I have been doing a lot of Nclex questions & my mind is a little warped!:trout: Sorry if I am confusing you.

ABC's are first. Without ABC's everything else is kind of useless. I mean who cares about their safety if they've got an occluded ariway or are bleeding profusely? Second is Maslow's heirarchy of needs. Pain is absolutely last and is considered psychosocial. The only time it's not is in cases of cancer, terminal illness, sickle cell, MI and there's something else that I'm forgetting.
I honestly didn't think of the nursing process at all during my NCLEX. The closest I came was assessment vs. implementation questions and then I was thinking about what Kaplan said and not APIE, lol.

Thanks NJNursing, but can you elaborate further for me, if there is no airway problem, and it is pain in terminal illness, or sickle cell pain, or MI, or cancer, would you put that patient first, thanks so much.
