Help me with my research for my Senior Thesis, please!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everyone!

I am doing my thesis for graduation on the health habits of the working nurse, and how the nurse believes that their own health habits affect their perceived credibility as a health educator. Please help me out with my research by taking this survey, which should only take about 5-10 minutes to complete. I am looking specifically for RNs working full-time in a hospital based setting. I really appreciate your help, and look forward to seeing the data!

Note: The data will remain anonymous, with no identifying signifiers. Participation is voluntary, and in no way will impact your career as an RN. The data collected will be used in a thesis required for graduation for my BSN, and in a presentation in front of the nursing department of my school.

My professor was fine with this type of surveying format, since we were having issues going through the IRB at the hospital I currently work for. This is not a cop-out for doing the hard work. I've done it all, believe me. We understand the issue of validity, and that is mentioned in my thesis. Thank you for your input though.

Don't you have to go through an IRB regardless of where you do this survey?

A quick google suggests that yes, even if you're doing the survey online on a message board, you still need IRB approval. Since it's anonymous, you can probably qualify for expedited approval, but you still need to go through *some* IRB. Not sure which IRB is required for public message boards, AN.com specifically.

Actually, your research would probably qualify as exempt, but you still need to file with the applicable IRB. You cannot make that judgment - the IRB needs to.

As you probably know, there are several levels of studies requiring different levels of IRB review. A survey (even on paper) that is filled out and anonymously submitted if the respondent chooses to return it is not in the category requiring IRB review for protection of human subjects, and any IRB to which you submit it will so tell you.

Good luck on your paper.

Not pointing direct fingers. There are PLENTY of people out there, nurses and non-nurses who think that only REAL nurses work in hospitals. Those who do home health, clinic, LTC, case management, prison, etc are somehow lackies who can't "cut it" with hospital work. SO not the case!

I'm not trying to discredit you or any other RNs not working in a hospital, I just wanted to use the most extreme case for my research! I'm sorry if I offended you in any way!

I get this all the time when an attorney asks me in deposition, "Well, NURSE GrnTea, you can't prescribe anything, because you're not a DOCTOR, isn't that right?" And I explain about nursing diagnosis and the nursing process.

Atty: "How long has it been since you worked as a nurse?"

Me: "I'm working as a nurse today, counselor."

Atty: "I mean, how long since you did patient care?"

Me: "I'm addressing Mr. X's care needs today."

Atty: "How long since you have worked in a hospital?"

Me: "I left hospital work to practice expert nursing in other settings X years ago."
