HELP! Quit LTC Job without having another one

Published

I am an RN leaving my first job, an LTC after 10 months. The place was a nightmare. It was very unsafe and unethical. I tried my best to wait and find another place of employment before leaving but it seemed to get worst as time went on. When I was hired many employees told me most RNs there don't last a year and I would not be different. I see what they mean now. It has been a struggle to find a job, I had an interview for entry level and DID NOT GET THE JOB. How can some one get turned down for an entry level positon that's embarrassing. I just know if I stay in this place my license is at risk. I am damned if I do or don't! I am also in the middle of taking care of two elderly grandparents with dementia that I live with. I don't know what will become of my career. I just wanted to work and go back for my BSN/MSN bridge program. HELP I don't know what to do!

Examples of what happened: Patient's missing medication(Hiv meds)

Patients falling and hitting their heads and them not wanting to be sent to hospital

Supervisor covering for incompetent nurses and pointing fingers at other nurses

Knowing a patient would benefit from attention of an MD and being told to lie

Hospice patient dying in front of family without any PAIN MEDICATION and told to wait tomorrow to help them!

The facilities bad rep has been well documented by the STATE!!

HELP I don't know what to do!

Good luck to you, regardless of what happens. I know from firsthand experience that remaining at a less-than-stellar workplace can be a soul-drenching experience.

Okay that is terrible! I can't believe that is the practice at your facility. Quickly, apply to other places while staying at your job so you can be paid. Try your best for the patients and by the way, if supervisor tells you to do something and you think it's against your judgment as a prudent nurse, don't be afraid to go right over her head! It's your license at risk! One trick I use is when the supervisor Advise me to do something I don't think is right I tell the family what is going on with their family member and get the family riled up to demand to bring their family to hospital and then connect the phone line to supervisor to speak to them. After the supervisor speak to family member they have no choice but to be okay to sending patient out of facility. Of course after that you call the doctor to get the real order for the hospital evaluation but that's how it works. The supervisor would never go against family wishes because they know their butt is on the line in a lawsuit if they go against family wishes

I'm sorry you're dealing with that! You need to find small community hospitals... They usually pay less but always need staff and tend to hire new nurses. My hospital is like that, most nurses start there but won't retire there. You need to find a stepping stone hospital and quick
