Hello,
I am applying to work from home positions and I am noticing that a lot of companies require a designated workspace? i.e. Humana, United Health Group. Would I be able to set up an office space in my living room or do I need a home office? I live in a small 2 br apt with my child. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A home office or a desk in the corner of your living room is considered designated workspace. Any space that you do not use for any other purpose. Dining room table and couch are not designated workspaces.
Thank you! A friend of mine told me I had to have a locked office which I don't and she said most companies require a locked office. Do you know if Humana or United Health Group fall under those companies?

The designated workspace requirement will be described in your contract.
I work from home, I had to send a photo of a door that can be locked. This could be your living room door, if that is where your desk is.
Don't over think this. As long as you do not break HIPAA regulations, you will be fine.

UHC requires that you have a room that can be locked.

Go to IRS.gov to see the requirements for home office expenses so you can deduct them when you do your taxes next time.
BTDT - would a lockable filing cabinet be acceptable?
Does that room have to be used solely for work? Can she do her work in her bedroom or her living room if she doesn't have a spare room that can be dedicated solely for work?
