I used straight A's Mental Health.....I went from an 80 on my first quiz to a 92!!! I am a Med surg person, was hard for me at first to understand mental health. One thing to keep in mind, good communication is key.

mental health can be challenging. It is so different from the med/surg philosophies. Where are you struggling and what are your weaknesses in the test? Do you understand the structure of the DSM and how to categorize disorders? I have a psych nursing care plan book that seems to help alot. I hope this helps.

I found when learning the different personality disorders, etc to think of somebody famous that had that disorder...for example Ted Bundy had a classic antisocial personality disorder.
It also helped that with each disorder we studied I happened to have a patient with the same disorder and every one of them was textbook!
Have you studied therapeutic communication yet??

I think it is important to remember your communication skills and to look at the big picture. I didn't have a problem in mental health, but ALL of my friends did. And if you focus on what you aren't doing instead of trying to absorb and pace yourself then you are just increasing your own anxiety. The NCLEX books helped me a lot, and the NCLEX 3500 Insitutional Version on line helped me A LOT!!! It lets you test and see the rationale for what you got wrong and right. It was a really helpful tool>
oops...
my problem is communication
we just had 3 lectures on Motivational interviewing.....I STILL DONT GET IT

Some advice my wife gave me: If you see butterflies, flowers and happy faces in an answer, it's usually the right one.
I started out having a bit of trouble with the class, because I'm on of those old meanies whose first instinct is to say "deal with it" (I was a prison employee for a lonnnng time), and had a hard time believing all those "please tell me how you feel about it *sniff sniff cry moan* " answers could really be right.
I have the straight A medical surgical and maternal. I like them!
Actually this semester, I decided to not read the assigned textbook for maternity. So far, my average is a 95. I have one more test and the final. We will see how that pan out.
