HELP PLEASE. cal state prerequisites..

Published

Hi im going to college next year and i want to go to a cal state because of the over crowding of junior colleges. My question is, do you only take the required prerequisite classes for the RN program when its your first year at a cal state right out of highschool. Like do you have to take general ed???

You can take your pre-reqs along with your general ed requirements. I would recommend doing as many GEs as you can before getting into a nursing program. I know a few people in my classes had to finish all their GEs after they finished all the nursing classes were over, so they graduated a quarter after I did.

I also recommend seeing a school counselor. They can help you map out your schedule so you know what you need to do every quarter/semester.

thanks for the reply. do you or anyone else know of a junior college in california thats not impacted. Meaning ill be able to get my pre and co requisites no problem?!

Since you're just entering college, there's pretty much no way you'll get priority over the people who have been at the college already, so it's all up to luck to see how much pre-req classes you can get during a semester.

You can take your GE at any time. I would recommend taking at least your lower if not also upper division GE and getting out of the way before you get into a Cal State nursing program. Its hard enough just doing the nursing classes!

I got my BSN at a cal state. I took as much GE & pre-reqs (some of the pre-reqs like Biology and Psychology also counted towards my GE) as I could the first 2 years before I applied for nursing school, and was able to finish my BSN in 4.5 years. Also some advice: Take your pre-reqs as early as possible, especially anatomy & physiology, biology, etc because it seems like EVERYONE is a pre-nursing student wanting to get into those classes as well. (This is not just in junior colleges but also in state universities too)

The freshmen at my school usually had priority registration over sophomores/juniors, so you have an advantage to register early for classes. But don't take them all at once and overwhelm yourself, as GPA counts towards getting into nursing school. I never got below a B in my pre-reqs. I did some volunteer work in a hospital too.

Good luck to you!! :typing

That is totally wack and backwards from all the colleges I have ever attended. The more units a person had the higher their priority was for registration...people that only need a few classes to graduate should be able to sign up for classes before freshmen who have a lot more opotions left on what they need for their degree. Many classes fill up quickly and it is just not fair for a freshmen to get into a class that he/she could take another semester over a Senior that only needs that one class to graduate.

THANKS! do you mind sharing what state school you went to? and do you have to declare pre nursing as your major when your applying? or can you just sign up for the gE & pre req courses that will go toward your nursing major after being accepted with major undeclared? thanks in advance.

I hope you passed your AP and/or IB exams in high school. Also take CLEP exams. They help so much. The AP exams I took helped me so much too.

Nursing prereqs for AP exams in high school are: English (maybe both English exams), Statistics, Chemistry, Psychology, and a few others. Some other exams that help are AP US History, government, and foreign language.

just check with the csu you want to apply with... look at their pre reqs... as in right now im doing my masters in P.A. and my csu cut 6 days out of the quarter for us!!!! because of the economy............
