Help- nursing schools

Published

Hello All,

I am a Pre-Nursing Student at San Francisco State University as a 2nd year. I would like to hear all of your guys input on my standing as pre-nursing student as I am going to apply to Nursing in about a semester or two. I am currently taking Physio, and it is very hard for me but I am trying my best. I took Anatomy lec/lab over the summer and passed with a C. I took Microbio, Chemistry, Stats, Comm, and am currently taking Nutrition. I am also a volunteer at San Francisco General Hospital. I plan to take a CNA class and become a CNA so that I can gain more experience in this field and increase my chances of getting accepted into Nursing school. I already took the TEAS and am planning to retake it so I can improve my score.

I am aiming for mostly out of state Nursing schools since my grades are not straight A's like other students.

Please give me your thoughts and suggestions. Out of state schools suggestions you may know of would be great!

Thank you so much!

I'm not sure that going out of state would help you. Why do you think that another state's nursing programs will be less difficult than your home state?

California is highly impacted.

California is highly impacted.

Sorry, I don't understand. Impacted by what?

Most of the US has highly competitive nursing programs accepting those with high TEAS/HESI and GPA's 3.75 and higher.

I'm a student at San Jose State, which is also in the CSU system like SFSU. Impaction simply means that admission to any major, or program is competitive. Just fancy lingo.

Honestly though OP, if you find yourself having a hard time in a couple science courses at SFSU, do you think that by applying to an OOS school, the prereq classes will be easier? Or even the program itself? I don't think that problem lies in the school, but in your study habits etc.

You should seek help from other prenursing students at your school, and see how they prepare for exams and such, and/or get help from your professors. If you still have a hard time with the classes, maybe nursing isn't for you.

I am a pre-nursing student in NYC, hoping to apply to a nursing program in a year or so. Demands are insanely high:

1. GPA must be 3.0 and up. On average, students applying to the programs have 3.7 GPAs.

2. Per 1 spot in the program there are up to a hundred applicants.

3. Students must obtain a grade of B or better on all of their pre-reqs.

4. Applicants must take an entrance exam. Guess what? High score is important.

Here you go!

I came from the bay area (San Jose) before moving up to Oregon (which isn't much easier to get into a program, hundreds of applicants for 30 slots at the local CC and University programs). There were a couple of schools in the south bay (DeAnza and Evergreen) come to mind that were either first come-first serve or let people in through a lottery. There's also a program up in Northern California in Yreka that is a first come first serve deal -- it's not a traditional RN program but an LVN program, but if you go there you are automatically given a slot to continue on into the RN bridge program there if you wish to.
