I just graduated from Excelsior a couple of months ago and am currently studying for NCLEX-RN. I, like you, have a full time job and a family with a small child and couldnt find the time to attend school. This was a great choice for me. You have to be self motivated to be successfull since its all self paced. There is no online class to speak of. The college provides you with the study guide, then its up to you to learn the material, you then go to a testing center and take their exams. The college network and Rue both only supply you with materials to pass Excelsior tests. I did not sign up with either, I purchased materials off of Ebay. (saved $$$$ doing this) I also HIGHLY reccomend purchasing Excelsior practice tests. PM me if you have any other questions about the program. Like I said it was the best choice for my family and I.
Before begining this program you need to check with your state board of nursing to verify that they do indeed except Excelsior's degree. There are a handful of states that wont or that require you to have worked for so many hours elsewhere prior to getting licensed.
Good Luck!!
I went thru the College Network, not really knowing much about on line colleges/classes but the guy from TNC was not the horror story I hear about on the boards here he was upfront with me.
You can go to Excelsior.edu and get their information packet on their program directly without TCN or Rue.
The Excelsior tests are NOT easy, nor is it a mickey mouse operation. I have taken my nursing pre-req's with them and the tests are hard, you do need to study.
After checking out their web site, contact your state BON to see if Excelsior's diploma is accepted to sit in on your state NCLEX-RN test. I did that at the beginning of the year and asked if 2011 would change that, I got the green light and was told what to do when I graduate. Some states now ask for preceptorship or endorsement when graduating from Excelsior.
It would be doable working full time, but don't expect to be done in months. But it won't take forever either. And you can work, ask your co-workers for help, and look for a RN mentor- someone who will let you do mock check offs with as you get into the nursing skills.
I work in LTC, and I have been picking a res and doing a care plan on them just get used to putting one together. That's how I spend my break.
Good Luck!!! :) :) :)
I finished all the nursing courses within 10 weeks with a 3.75 gpa and worked 3 PT jobs. So in all it took 10 months to get my RN but a lot of that time was waiting for paperwork to be approved, waiting 2 months for official graduation date to get transcripts sent to my BON. I didn't learn what I would have from a traditional program but I'm motivated to learn and ask what I'm unsure about. Good luck and please don't go through a publishing company like the College Network. You can gather all the same study material in any nursing textbook.
THANKS INLPN93 i will look into that. thanks you very much for yall input. I didnt know where to start, all i know is that i made a promise to myself that i will be a RN by age 25 or 26 and i plan on sticking with that
IMHO, stop putting an age on what it is that needs to be completed on what time frame. There’s no need to hop, seek and jump when you can just take one step at a time. Just focus on getting into a nursing program and doing well. Good Luck.
All in all it took me about 1.5 years to complete the program. I took and passed all the exams within 3 months. I was very pregnant when it came time to go to the CPNE (clinical portion, I had to go out of town for) so I took some time off and took the CPNE when my son was 6 months old. My application for the CPNE took about 3 months for me to get a date, I then went about 3 months after accepting the date.
Good Luck!

Good Morning fellow nurses:nurse:
I am a nurse from Philadelphia, who is trying to become a RN i have been a lpn for almost 2yrs. I like being a lpn but RN is my goal. I need to get some information on online courses. I currently work full-time and have other responabilities so i cant just drop down to part-time or stop working to go back to school. So i decided that online will be my best bet. I heard about college network and rue but i need to hear reviews from people about taking courses online. So please feel free to leave comments, suggestions, questions and concerns. I will be greatly apperciated.
p.s will i be able to get aid for online classes
