I was accepted to NYU last fall and took a semester of required prerequisites. I was supposed to start the nursing sequence in the Spring 2010, but I just couldn't afford the tuition and took a leave of absence. Well, I probably won't be able to afford it in the Fall either (the economy is pretty much killing my family). So I am looking for alternatives.
I am looking for BSN programs (accelerated or traditional) and already have a BS degree in another field. I looked at Pace, which is not cheap either, but still less money and at Hunter, which will be hard to get into. The downside is that all the schools seem to require more prereqs than NYU, so I will need to find somewhere to take all those courses just to apply.
Does anyone know of any programs that will take me and allow me to complete prereqs there, like NYU did? I shudder to think of trying to get into prereq courses at CUNY schools as a non-degree student. Also, I am constrained to looking at programs in NYC area only AND schools accessible by public transportation.
Please help! My overall GPA from first degree was 3.4 and the GPA from NYU prereqs was 3.75

I am shocked no one has replied to your post! But try College of Mount Saint Vincent, they have a nursing program for second degree students.

Try SUNY DOWNSTATE. It is in Brooklyn. They have RN-BSN and also have an accelerated program. So much cheaper than NYU!!

Dominican College in Rockland County. I applied and am waiting to hear back. It is $35,000 for the 12 month program which begins in May 2011. Cost of living vis-a-vis apartment renting and what not is certainly much cheaper than NY metro area. Just a thought ;-)

SUNY Downstate is very hard to get into, but they had a good aBSN program.
What pre-reqs do you have? I was looking at aBSN programs until I got into Kingsbourgh, and I decided that was the best for me that I got in to stay.
Taking your pre-reqs at a CUNY isn't hard at all and it's very doable.

All you have to do is apply to CUNY as a second degree student. That way you will have access to register for classes. I am a student ( first BA degree and will graduate in May 2011) at Lehman . I had classmates in APII and APII who were second degree students....the school did not know that they did not plan to stay at the school of course.
That is the easiest way and cheapest way to do the prereqs. I plan on applying to ABSN programs for Fall 2011. Since you want to stay in the city that is a limiting factor. Concordia College in Bronxville in an option if you would be willing to commute. The program costs $39K. NYU is really on the high end of things.
LIU Brooklyn has a traditional program and the program is very easy to get into. I got in and decided not to go since I want to do an ABSN. But LIU is not that cheap either.
Just work on taking the prereqs at one of the CUNY schools.
