Hello everyone!
I am a new grad. who has a part time RN job. I do not get to sit much and I am on my feet most of the day. I just started this job. Well, by the middle of the week, my knees started hurting. I went to the gym with my husband (I used to walk the treadmill and do the machines and so forth, but since my knees were a bit sore, I just swam in the pool). Well ever since then, my knees have been hurting. Both knees, but mostly my left knee.
I wear pretty good nursing type sneakers (not clogs). Will this go away you think once I keep working?? Will my knees just get used to it?? Once I lay down and get off of them for a few hours, they are ok.... but get me walking and working and they HURT. AAAHHHHH! I see my doctor tomorrow.
Help! I am just starting my career and LOVE nursing. I HOPE THIS IS NOT THE END! I have NEVER had knee problems before!!
Traditional medicine is flawed at times and is far from perfect but it is the only proven system we have of managing disease. Those grandmothers, ancestors etc who used 'home remedies' also had a much higher mortality rate than we do.
Sorry, but I am not into so called 'natural medicine' - I agree that chiropractors and acupuncturists (for example) have their place, but frankly, traditional medicine is confrontational, which is why people prefer to seek alternative or natural medicine, it gives you responsibility for your medical condition and that's hard for people to take sometimes.
Apologies to OP for going off topic.
Well ok that is a little bit of unfair statement...our ancestors died due to the lack of antibiotics (for the most part anyway!!) and other meds or supplies, you cant blame the home remedies for that...also I just think that the docs are to quick to jump prescribe meds,I'm sure everyone remembers the advices from nursing school that the meds are the last option but the pharmaceutica companies needs our money so here we go:)
I am absolutely thinking about young and old patient's well-being when I replied asking you not to recommend herbs without the consultation of a doctor. There are many herbs that interfere with medication, and while many older 'treatments' have merit, many do not, and have detrimental effects. Herbs can have a negative effect on people and are often misrepresented to be better than they actually are. We have many scientific advancements and know a lot more than we did then. People live much longer because of appropriate and monitored use of medication.I would also like to know what else you think nursing school teaches that you disagree with.
The real world of nursing.Do you actually think you will do everything according to the nursing book, yeah maybe in the perfect world LOL

Did you happen to see that I am currently an experienced med surg nurse? I am asking what nursing philosophies you disagree with since you seem to be pretty pro-CAM, and seemed to be surprised when I talked about how self medicating with herbs can be a detrimental way to go sometimes. You have to be very careful of what you advocate when you have an RN behind your name. Heck, many can't even follow the clearly printed directions on a bottle of Tylenol properly so why do you advocate they manage an herbal regimen?
And docs don't prescribe OTCs to fatten the wallets of the pharma companies. Besides, you are essentially advocating fattening the wallet of the herbal companies vs the makers of generic tylenol.
Thanks everyone!! GREAT advice here! I will heed it. The warmth and ice and new better shoes sounds like a fabulous idea. I too think I just overdid it. I am not used to walking and standing all day. The knees get better when I am off them. I am a tad overweight... not too bad though. I am overweight by like 20 pounds. So bad, but not horrible. I was doing low impact workouts to try and lose the extra weight and with the sore knees have had to forgo the regular workouts. :scrm:I am not too old either- mid 30's. So I was like 'what is up with this???'
I am going to try warmth in the morning to loosen up the knee muscles and then ice packs (peas) when I get home. I will elevate them too and I am going to buy better shoes. Someone mentioned Z-Coil. I found a place near me who sells them.
I will let you all know how it turns out.

you are in the "classic" knees-are-going-south....age group, biking might do more for weight loss, and probably seeing a sports med doc (physiatrist) would be good, to check/monitor your gait....DO NOT ignore.....check out the glucosamine and chondroitin with MSN,,,,,good luck
Lots of advice here. I had the same issue and self treated for years only to find when I finally went to an ortho I had severe chrondomalcia of the patella bilaterally. So now 3 surgeries down the road and having tried every herbal and home remedy possible I finally succumbed the the Supartz injections which made more difference than anything I have done. I would suggest having a good ortho evaluate and also as they told me "lots of swimming". Swimming doesnt put the strain that other exercise does and also riding a bike. It may turn out just to be a strain but it's best to be sure and not overlook the problem self treating like I did. I initially thought it was just I was overworking my knees being on them so much. I use ice almost daily!! Also I use nuprene supports on my knees when working. They help alot although are hot.
