HELP! My knees hurt! Have a new job! What to do??

Published

Hello everyone!

I am a new grad. who has a part time RN job. I do not get to sit much and I am on my feet most of the day. I just started this job. Well, by the middle of the week, my knees started hurting. I went to the gym with my husband (I used to walk the treadmill and do the machines and so forth, but since my knees were a bit sore, I just swam in the pool). Well ever since then, my knees have been hurting. Both knees, but mostly my left knee.

I wear pretty good nursing type sneakers (not clogs). Will this go away you think once I keep working?? Will my knees just get used to it?? Once I lay down and get off of them for a few hours, they are ok.... but get me walking and working and they HURT. AAAHHHHH! I see my doctor tomorrow.

Help! I am just starting my career and LOVE nursing. I HOPE THIS IS NOT THE END! :bluecry1: I have NEVER had knee problems before!!

New Balance walking shoes! For icing use frozen bags of peas because they will conform to your knee shape better and you'll get a more complete chill. Try not to allow your gait to overly favor one side or you'll soon create new problems. Do see a good knee ortho (ask around for who's the best) and be sure not to get pawned off on the PA. No offense, let them assess but insist on seeing the MD as well!

Sorry kids this is simply a case of overuse or simply being on your feet more than you are used to. While the sun is warm and fuzzy!:wink2: It does not reduce swelling which is what is causing the pain. Any sports trainer in the world will tell you "RICE" Rest Ice Compression Elevation. Most of the time you dont have time to do all 4. Even though there may be no visual swelling. Thats is the cause of the pain. You can use heat just befor activity to lossen things up. HOWEVER Ice will reduce the swelling and therefot the pain!!! :D

yes, see a good ortho physician, he may be able to get you some customized orthotics that will help, also if you are overweight as i am, a good diet and low impact exercise program will help shed pounds thus shedding the weight your knees have to support. it worked for me!:nurse::twocents:

Nope, no DX allowed on Allnurses. TOS. You Bad. (cop)

I know we are in the medical profession but why do we always jump straight to the DOC'S Lets use our crtical thinking skills. Ice and ace bandages are cheap! If that does not work then you go to the next step Weight loss if thats an issue. Finally if these things dont work then you go to the Doc and get a scan.

Its not a DX its called common sense! Critical thinking skills are taught in first semester nursing! :-)

Wow I'm sorry for your pain my BF has the same issues from standing on his feet too much and walking and exercising...I can recommend applying heat to your knees (maybe buy a heating pad) and just dont exercise too much...also going to the doc is a waste of time because all he/she will do is prescribe all those terrible meds like aspirin or tylenol or NSAIDs which in the long run damage your kidney, sorry to burs the bubble but I have seen the effect in the people I know!!!Best of look look for alternative medicine cures like herbs, compresses.

Herbs are basically medication that hasn't gone through as rigorous studies and with less rigorous regulation. Herbs can absolutely have side effects and can interfere with other medications you are currently taking, which is why it is best to speak with your doctor before beginning any herbs. Please do not recommend that people start taking herbs without speaking with their doctor first.

Exactly, I dont see any real medical advice:) It is not like we are prescribing any meds, lay people go to walgreens and buy tylenol...well anyway back to the subject it just came to me that vitamin B is good for the legs..

Well like I mentioned in my last post I'm not telling her to go buy a 5 gram biotin pills and take it...and yeah she should seek medical advice or maybe pharmacist advice but for some herbs you dont have to rush to your doc (I'm taking about herbal tea stuff like that or chamonile compresses, any good herbal guide is enough I think but I guess everyone is different but my whole point was to suggest HOME MADE REMEDIES!

Also sometimes it is good to use common sense, critical thinking skills and dont take everything they taught you in nursing school Literally. Before replying please think about our grandmothers, mothers ancestors who used different home remedies and cures.

Traditional medicine is flawed at times and is far from perfect but it is the only proven system we have of managing disease.

Those grandmothers, ancestors etc who used 'home remedies' also had a much higher mortality rate than we do.

Sorry, but I am not into so called 'natural medicine' - I agree that chiropractors and acupuncturists (for example) have their place, but frankly, traditional medicine is confrontational, which is why people prefer to seek alternative or natural medicine, it gives you responsibility for your medical condition and that's hard for people to take sometimes.

Apologies to OP for going off topic.
