Bad Boys, Nice Guys and Real Men™
Real Men Dont treat their Mates like there MOMS. This is were most men run into trouble! Men get into relationships and all of a sudden they let thier mates become thier mothers because we think thats what they want. Women weather they mean it or not will let themselves fall into this roll. So we start asking permission to do things and we also try to anticipate what they want so we dont get in trouble! Just like when we were little boys. Now personally I can be a Bad boy, Nice Guy, And a Real man all at the same time and that may be what it takes to be a real man. Knowing what is needed at the time. I also do not ask permission to do things! I will get my mates opinion but the decison is mine to be made. Sometimes she is smarter then me so she sways my decison other times she does not. If she gets mad I tell her you are not my mom and to move on. I also tell her I will not make deciosons for her if she wants my advice I will give if not I just keep my mouth shut and let the chips fall. This allows me to only feel the stress and anxiety I place on myself. You sometimes need these things to know that you are still alive and kicking. I dont know or think I have the answer to what women want all I do know is who I am. Some women like it and others dont and I am good with that!

From Police Officer To BSN- can it work ?
You can do it and this is why! I was a cop for just shy of 8yrs when a 9mm round ended my career. I will graduate from nursing school in less then 15 weeks. If you would of asked me when I first started I would of told you that I liked police work better. However I have learned over the past 2yrs that the two jobs are very similar. This is why. Most of the time in both professions the only time people want anything to do with you is if there is something wrong. Then they think that you owe them something. As you know and will learn both professions teach you to always keep the good of the people you are serving as your first priorty. I read something earlier today that pretty much sums it up "Cops and Nurses have to be hardened just enough to not take home all the bad and sad things they see often joking in private about the very stuff that would make most people cringe, but they need to be soft enough to show compasion to there patients or some skell that stinks to high hevean that you are trying to find a place to sleep so he does not freeze his ass of on a winter night" Tell which I am A Cop or A Nurse 1) When we first meet something is wrong 2) I ask you what is wrong 3) I ask you for all your personal info 4) I investgate the situation 5) I assess you 6) I make recomendations to a higher authority 7) I take orders form a higher authority 8) I carry out those orders to the letter or I get my ass in a sling! 9) I Pray for the best outcome 10)I Move on to the next person and start all over again The answer is I am both and very proud of it!!

Female nurses have more advantage over male nurses?
You may be right my Police training may be at odds with my nursing training, but once I get them meshed together which is starting to happen I think it is going to be a huge advantage. I will have the nurturing, clinical skills, people skills, as well the skills my prior career have provided me. You learn to see things differently as a cop. Not to mention you are already oreinted to high stress emergancy situations which most new nurses male or female would get flustered in. Many of the people that I work with have already commented on how level headed I am when the Poop hits the fan more so than any of the new nurses and in many cases more then the Vets, regardless of gender. Just a note I like and respect all nurses they are smart hardworking good people! I just like the Females more simply because they are female! I am just joking around please dont crucify me!!!

Snow- at what point do you call out?
As a former cop I put nurses in the same category as Police, Fire, and EMS. (Hero jobs) That means you bring you butt to work regardless of the weather and relive your co-workers! Just my humble opinion. :nuke:

Double Standard with Sexual Harassment
You are entitled to your opinion! Certain people will continue to perpetuate an environment thats is more difficult to work in that it needs to be, by being overly uptight and nitpicking every interaction between male and female co-works as something more then what they are. This is why a double standard will contiue in the work place. I am sure that in your 20yrs of service at some point you have said something that could be taken out of context. Hopefully and thankfully for you the person it was directed at was "blazie" and took it with a grain of salt instead of getting all upset like some other people might get! Just a thought!

Double Standard with Sexual Harassment
It has nothing to do with being sexually obsesive! It has to do with not being uptight to the point where everything you say or do is a sin! Like I said I get that there is real Sexual harrassment out there and that it is a real crime! I just think a little more caution should be used when acuseing or complaining about it. We are being taught to think the worst of every situation and it not necessary!

Double Standard with Sexual Harassment
To Politically correct and I hate it! People please remember that we work in a very stressful environment and a little dark humor and or flirting often relives the stress of a bad situation! Yes there is real sexual harrasment out there perpertraited by both genders however there is a double standard. Most often if a female says something its a joke. If a male says something he is a sexual preditor. NOW i think we all NEED TO RELAX and think twice befor we get all upset over nothing. IF I got upset everytime I heard a female co-worker or patient make a coment about my butt as I walked away or evry time a female was a little flirty with me. I would not be able to work in a female dominated profession. Just last night a shift change i went to get the radio from my female co-worker it was in her back pockect. she had her hands full sticks her butt at me and precedes to tell the PT. and Doc she is with that I just came over to get the radion because I wanted to touch her butt! So Infront of everyone there I said if i wanted to touch your butt I would just do this and I Goosed her! Well she turns red and starts laughing the PT. Almost wets her self from laughing so hard and the Doc who was Female is not for behind. Finaly I grab The radio turn on my heel and stroll awaying leaving them all in tears. Now we took a sressfull situation for the PT. and made it easier to deal with. FYI. Later in the shift as my co-worker was leaving she walked by and whacked me on the butt. I swaer she left a hand print. No harm no foul! I would not behave like this with all my co-workers but certian people you know you can joke with and others you cant there is a time and place for things but you have to be intuitave and know when those times are. which can be difficult to do when everyone has become SOOOO sensitve and wants to belly-ache about everything!

What would you change about Nursing to make it better?
Just a couple of Ideas! 1) Act more like cops! Think blue wall! I always see nurses looking to throw other nurses and staff under a bus! I am not saying big mistakes should be cover up. However we should look out for each other and if we see something coming down the line that dose not look right help your brother's and sisters's out befor they get jammed up! 2) Stop eating our young! I always here the Vets say the new grads dont know anything! this happens in police work as well the difference is you are told you dont know anything then a Vet takes you under his wing and makes sure you dont get killed or kill someone for no reason. THINK MENTOR 3) Act like pro's get treated like pro's 4) Admin should have to spend time on the floors not locked in there office. This would rectify many many problems! 5) Better benefits and retirement. 6) Peer review to weed out the lazy or incompetinent(bad speller!) 7) Reward good work at all levels starting with the Aids( over worked and under apreciated!) Refer to #6 8) Finally STICK TOGETHER. To make it better for all Nurse's

How do you deal ith mouthy rude CNAs?
First make sure you are not the problem. This will be difficult being that it is hard to take a step back and judge your own behavior. We always want to place the blame eslwhere. If you are sure it is not you then you have to be the Professional and try to resolve the problem. Talk to the CNA like a person not a servant the way many but not all nurses do!!! This in it self may go along way. Find out what her problem is if its somethig you can fix then do so if not you have no choice but to start working up the chain of comand. I personally would use this as a last resort.

Should student nurses be required to get the H1N1 vaccine
Its your body not there's! I dont think it should be manditory seems a bit unconstitional to me. In New York they have backed of the mandatory thing because a nurse somewhere filed a lawsuit or so I have heard.

HELP Resident calling baby "stupid" What to do!!!??
Please talk to the resident first! There is no sense in going straight up the chain of command! Give her the chance to correct the behavior. If this does not work tell your supervisor not hers. If you still dont get a satisfactory results goto your Sups. Boss. and so on. As far as talking to a baby the way some of you claim to I can tell you this. I may not be able to stop myself from doing something very bad to you! At the least I would make it my goal to end your career! Think about someone talking to your kid like that! or better yet imagine its your kid you are talking to! Its OK to joke around when in the presence of co-workes but not in front of the pts. or families. There is a time and place for jokes Just remember we are professional's!

Is it possible to work full time and become a nurse???
Im doing it right now brother and most of the time I am dragging my ass at home. However being a male nursing student and working in the hospital i am bright eyed and bushy tailed. I wont let my instructors , co-workers or supervisors see me dragging its a pride thing!

speeding tickets
As a former cop. I can tell you I wouldnt give a nurse a ticket unless they were doing something really stupid! A little speeding as far as I was concerned did not fall into that catergory! Plus you never know you may end up on that nurse's table someday and you dont want them pinching the foley off or something like that!!

flu shot required
Looking for the loophole? Develop an egg allergy. Then they cant make you get the shot or hold you out of clinical because its a medical condition. Some may consider this unethical but each person should decide what goes in their body not an institution, college, or job.

Is it ok to specialize right out of school
I am glad to here all of this great advice! I am a student as well and will graduate in may. All here is med/surg med/surg med/surg. I would eventually like to got to the ED but am afraid of getting in over my head right out of school. I have made a good rep for my self in the hospital I work in as an NA. I have the chane to go into oncology or PCU right out of school. I think it will be one of those to start.
