Help! My grandma is in LTC, advice needed!

My grandmother has recently been admitted to a LTC facility for rehab reasons. Right now she can not walk, and they have only been able to get her up in her wheelchair. She is a large woman, so it is at least a 2 person transfer.

I got some disturbing news from my mother about grandma's situation. The doctor ordered her foley to be D/C'd. I just assumed that they would transfer her to a potty chair or at least use a bed pan. They are making her where a diaper! :angryfire She is not incontinent, never has had a problem in that area! She lays in a dirty diaper all night long because no one will change her :angryfire and she is too timid to do anything about it. :crying2:

I told my mother that grandma should not be in a diaper, that she can refuse it. She should ask for a bedpan. I figure if she hits the call light for the bathroom and they don't come for her, they will have a bigger mess on their hands.

She has also not had a shower in 3 weeks. They hardly clean her with a bed bath. I would think if they can transfer her to a wheelchair, they can transfer in to a shower chair and take her into the shower room! :uhoh3:

I don't know what to do. It is my dad's mom, and when he hears all of this he is going to hit the ceiling! :angryfire I'm afraid of how he is going to respond.

I guess what I am asking, am I crazy to think she has the right to a shower, and the right to choose not to be in a diaper and lay in her own urine all night long?

Please help, I don't know where to begin or who to even speak to at the LTC facility.

Sorry about the long story, but I just had to get that off my chest. Any info would be appreciated! :crying2:

I'm so glad your grandmother is doing better & at another facility. Please follow up on reporting the previous LTC facility - there is major neglect going on there!

Ditto!

You wonder what happens with all those other poor residents who don't have their families advocating for them like your grandmother had. Good job getting her out of there. :saint:

I posted a while back about making sure people in LTC settings get enough fluids/water especially this time of year. They can get dehydrated quickly even though they are in A/C.

My grandfather was in LTC for 10 years and im sure had my mother not gone DAILY and fed him, made sure he had enough fluids with his lunch that he would have died much sooner. Unfortunately, my mother had a period of a couple weeks that she couldnt go due to caring for my grandmother. He ended up in the hospital just as you said your grandmother did, basically comatose,, kidney failure and he did die.

Im glad you found another place for your grandmother, and may you have many more years to enjoy her love and company.

i am a nurse in a ltc. if you already met with the don and got no good results then i think you have a right to explain your story to the state of michigan. just because you are advocating for your grandma how many people there aren't being advocated for. i don't know the laws in michigan but in our facility there are 1-800 numbers for you to call and the numbers of the state department if you suspect any wrong doings or if you don't think the situation was handled properly. it's something to check into. by the way i'm from michigan.

thanks for the reply. i am actually in texas. just to give an update, the state now has someone in the nursing home to monitor things. the home is not allowed to admit any new patients at this time, or even let the one's that are in the hospital at the moment come back to the home when they are better. they described the staff as "having picked up some very bad habits". i would love to link to the article but i know that would be too personal. i will try to keep you updated as best as i can.

I pray that when the day comes for me to go to LTC, I have strong advocates like you and your family. Bless you.

Wow..I was gonna reply that this was and older thread but the OP updated us. Thanks, its nice to see how things turn out.

Sounds like the facility is a major mess. In Pa if the state has to come in an run thing or spend more than a survey visit, things are really bad and normally they will be closing it down soon.

Short staffing is the norm in LTC, call offs are and every shift occurance. This does not excuse these types of things from happening.

If we work short, we might not get to a shower for that shift, but you can be darn sure that it will get done the next shift or the next day. The CNAs are not the only staff responsible for hydrating the residents. Nurses do med passes and should be providing fluids, activites should have snacks and beverages at events.....see what I'm getting at, its a team effort. Sounds like this place has more than one or two systems missing.

You can report the facility to the state (dept of elderly affairs)if you are not satisifed with the DON's response. My father was in the same situation, I called the state, people were fired and it's a much better place. not perfect, but better.

Did you get your Grandma out of the N.H. It is never good when the State has a monitor in the building. Usually when a monitor is in the facility is so bad that you may be looking at a year for all to be fixed. A local LTC had to close the doors and they had a monitor in twice that I am aware of! I don't want to be the doom and gloom person but I just think that some families think that if a monitor is there then the State is whipping them into shape.

:offtopic: Unfortunately, many think that LTC is "beneath" them. I encourage fluids, but if a patient refuses.....it is hard. :o

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. When my Mom had a hip broken she gained some insight has to what I deal with everyday. I dont know why the CNA gets away with making a continent person incontinent .I have a resident that is afraid to go home now .The nite nurse insists on having the side rails up and we are a no restant facility.Family has to put their foot down. if no satisfaction find another place. I'll say a prayer.

My 75 year old father has parkinsons disease along with some other health issues and he had to go to a LTC facility for some rehab and I dealt with some of the same issues.. My father is continent but they took his underwear away from him and put him in diapers and it almost seemed to me as if it made him very depressed (or atleast thats the way I took it as and also felt thats what it did to him) I really had a hard time going to see him everyday b/c I would go in there and he would not have shaved his face or even had a shower or had his hair washed and I know he felt awful and it made me very upset and sad.. My suggestion to you is start with the DON and talk to them and then if that doesn't work go to the administrator and just be open with them and lay it all out on the table and tell them your concerns.. If they know what is going on they can do something to change it.. Don't be afraid to voice your concerns b/c that is your grandmother!! Trust me, I've had to stand up for my dad several times and I've had to tell them that I was going to move him if he didn't get the proper care that he needs and deserves.. Good luck and hang in there and don't be afraid to say something..
