Help, I need some advice!!! I'm a certified NP, I would consider myself a new graduate even though I became certified in 2017. I've still been at the bedside because I had a baby and wanted to stay 2 days a week at the hospital. Fast forward to now. I have been applying to NP jobs off and on for the last 6 months, its very competitive because of the amount of new NPs and because I live in San Diego and everyone wants to live here.
Long story short I have NP friends who helped me get my resume to the hiring managers of Minute Clinic and Planned Parenthood. I had phone interviews with both and will have in person interviews within the next 2 weeks. This would be my first NP job!!!!
I did part of my preceptorship at Minute Clinic so I know how it would be like to work there. I do see pros and cons about working at either place but I would like anyone's opinions on either company.
Minute Clinic is primary care so I would learn the basics but planned parenthood is women's health and very specialized. Any thoughts?
Thank you for everyone's time
Hello!!!
I would wait to pass your boards before applying. I don’t know what state you are in but in California where I’m at the state board processing time is probably at least 3-4 months, they are very slow!! I think they will take pending licenses but i know at my interview they told me they were having a hard time with new grads not being able to start because of the delay. As for benefits you have to work a minimum of 30 hours to qualify for medical/dental so you would have to work 4 days. I did not see anything about unions in my packet, so no unions in CA. The pay rate was $55 but it just increased to $58/hr in San Diego. So as a new grad I will make $58/hr for 40!hours per week. I have to see 27-30 patients. Work 2 Saturdays for full time. The rest of what you said it correct.
I can’t say about other parts of the country. Your rates sound low.
Planned Parenthood in San Diego hires flex positions first, which means I will work within 3 locations. Then when an internal permanent location position opens I can apply to that. So you might have to travel in the beginning anyhow.
Just apply to both and see!!!

Seriously?! How about anyone who appreciates providing adequate access to healthcare?! For many, pp does far more than gyn and abortion services. For some, it's their only form of primary care. For a PMHNP, you should know better than to throw out ridiculous comments like that. Absolutely disgusting.

I'm clearly in the basket of deplorables, lol.
I think planned parenthood would be much more interesting. I dont know about PP, but minute clinic makes you do EVERYTHING yourself- your the Np, MA, cashier, stocker etc. i bet MC pays better but I think PP would be more rewarding and interesting.
I also live and work in san diego. You could try Scripps health express, they are hiring and take new grads.
Hi Express099,
I was working as a RN for Scripps in San Diego. I did have a few NP interviews with Scripps with no luck, I also applied to the Scripps Health Express with no response. I was really bummed because I wanted to stay with Scripps. I got a job with planned parenthood, which is turning out to be a awesome company to work for. The pay is also pretty good being a new grad. I’ll do my year and see what comes up!!
Thank you for the advice:-)
Hello, I just finished my 2 months of training and I’m now on my own! I really love it!!! I enjoy the population that comes in, the training was awesome and I got 25 days to work with a clinician trainer that gave me tons of support. I’m at the PP of the pacific southwest in San Diego, I can’t tell you how other affiliates are but this one is great. Plus, the pay is good and training is great for a New Grad Np. The interviewing process is pretty extensive. Had a phone interview, then a in person interview at the corporate office, then a third interview with an in clinic manager. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Stephgriffin6, thanks for your response and for the info!
I would have to agree that my state, PA, is also slow in processing licenses so I can see why it might be better to wait. We also have a lot of NP schools in this area so I am guessing many students will be graduating in May as well and they may be inundated with new grad applications.
I guess I won't qualify for benefits if I get the weekend/ 3 day spot but that's ok because we have my husband's (although the job listing does include a generic spiel about benefits and diversity inclusion). I will see if I can negotiate for a higher pay rate if there are no benefits. I agree the rates are low. I made more than that starting as a new RN in NYC. The OP did not state where they were located, and I did ask but did not hear back from them.
That's kind of cool that you get to work in 3 locations. You can pick the one you like if a position opens up! It might be a little more interesting as well with different staff and patient populations.
Thanks again and please keep us posted about your experience ?
