Help, I need some advice!!! I'm a certified NP, I would consider myself a new graduate even though I became certified in 2017. I've still been at the bedside because I had a baby and wanted to stay 2 days a week at the hospital. Fast forward to now. I have been applying to NP jobs off and on for the last 6 months, its very competitive because of the amount of new NPs and because I live in San Diego and everyone wants to live here.

Long story short I have NP friends who helped me get my resume to the hiring managers of Minute Clinic and Planned Parenthood. I had phone interviews with both and will have in person interviews within the next 2 weeks. This would be my first NP job!!!!

I did part of my preceptorship at Minute Clinic so I know how it would be like to work there. I do see pros and cons about working at either place but I would like anyone's opinions on either company.

Minute Clinic is primary care so I would learn the basics but planned parenthood is women's health and very specialized. Any thoughts?

Thank you for everyone's time

Planned parenthood also does primary care so you'd get more varied experiences there. You may also get better orientation which would be important for you as you're so far removed since you graduated and became licensed.

Minute clinic from what I've read offer a a very brief orientation, then you're on your own.

What do you want from your job?

Hello ToFNPandbeyond,

Thank you for responding!!! I definitely want the training for sure and I know planned parenthood has a great training program, 12 weeks of training. Minute clinic only offers 80 hours to shadow and work with another Np and then you are on your own. The pay is the same at both.

My only concern is if I start my career at Planned Parenthood and I decide I don’t want to continue with women’s health then it would be hard to find another job in primary care. But you asked a very good question, what do I really want from a job. I guess after my interviews I will know more about each position.

Are you currently practicing?

I wouldn't worry about being stuck in women's health. Women's health is primary care. There's a broad range of primary care concerns you need to be involved and familiar with which are well beyond what some might consider a women's health concern. There are also people who rely on planned Parenthood as their pcps. Your ability to make that connection and articulate that in future interviews will be the difference between being stuck in a specialty and the capacity to move into other parts of primary care.

Thats a good point, thank you!!

I plan to apply to an opening for a PT, Sat position at my local Planned Parenthood, as I am a SAHM during the week. Do you know if the same 12 week orientation process still applies? The position would be 5 hours/ week. I would extend to FT once baby is older.

I work full time for Planned Parenthood. Hands down the best job i've had. Pay is lower than my other job offers, but i am soooo glad i took this position. Of course, every affiliate is different (and every clinic is different), so I can only speak for myself.

Plus, the work you do is so meaningful. It feels realllllly good to go home each day knowing that you are making a direct and measurable difference in someone's life, and in the health of the community as a whole.

And yes, there is a lot of primary care. In fact many of the clinics in our affiliate offer full scope primary care. I focus on sexual/reproductive health because that's my true love.

Hello,

I just got offered a full time NP clinician position with planned parenthood The training is about 12 weeks. I’m sure even if it’s a one day a week Np position you would still have to complete the training because they had set protocols.

Stephgriffin6, thank you for the info, it is appreciated! And congrats on the job!

Did you find it difficult to get interviews for NP positions after being at bedside for 2 years after certification? I am contemplating taking some time off but am concerned that the gap might make it hard to get a job later, as my area is super saturated with NP schools and new grad NPs.

Hi MedsurgeRN14,

Yes, I would say it was starting to get difficult getting interviews after 2 years. Just being a new grad in general it’s hard to get jobs, I’m in San Diego so my area is saturated also. It’s all about having connection and who you know is how you will get a job!!! After being certified for 6-12 months, I had three job interviews through the company I work, they like to hire within so that’s why I got asked for interviews. So, with planned parenthood and minute clinic they do like to hire new grads and at each interview they both pretty much asked why the 2 gap. But they seemed understanding about it. I got an interview with minute clinic because my RN co worker who was a recent new grad Np got hired on and I asked her for the managers email so when I saw a open position online I emailed her and introduced myself and dropped my friends name. I also had one of my preceptors at school at minute clinic and they like that. Even at the interview they told me they called my old preceptor as a reference. Actually, had a really good interview there as well but they told me at the interview they did not have any available positions at the moment. I would have had to keep emailing the manager weekly to check back on openings. That’s how my co worker got the job. With planned parenthood I had another RN coworker at my current position who also works at planned parenthood as a NP. I would always ask him about working there. When I finally saw an opening at the planned parenthood in my area i applied. When I saw my co worker at work he said he would send my resume to HR, and he did!!! The next day I got a phone interview and they told me he had referred me. They also seem to like referrals from current employees.

So, basically this is how I got a job 2 after being certified. Look on craigs list also!! I got offered a part time position with a doctor for 2 afternoons a week but turned it down because i would have to keep my floor nursing job for benefits and I want out of that.

I would also say my confidence level after 2 years out is a little lacking from lack of practice. That’s one of the reasons a like planned parenthood, lots of training!!!

After having my baby I really tried looking for a part time NP job, but those are harder to come by especially as an new grad NP. If I were you I would not wait 2 years and try to find a part time Np job. I feel like after 2 years I was becoming unmarketable.

If you have any more questions let me know!!

Stephgriffin6, thanks so much for the info! I really appreciate your advice and I think a part-time job is the best option for me right now. I don't know anyone at Planned Parenthood but its an organization I've wanted to work with for a while and I am so excited they have such a good training program, so I definitely plan to apply. I was planning to do an NP residency but that's not needed now that I learned PP has such a good orientation program!

There is a part-time job (M, W, Sat) at a Planned Parenthood about an hour away from me. I would like to apply but am in the last course of my FNP program and then I would still need to take boards. There is also another position for Sat only that is 20 mins away from me but I prefer the M, W, Sat job because I can learn more. Do you think I should apply now or wait until after boards?

I also saw this contract info for Planned Parenthood on another site. The OP states PP is union but I read only a handful of locations are actually union. Is your PP unionized? Is this the benefits package you were offered? Do you think the benefits package would be the same for part-timers as well?

"Anyone ever made a concession on pay/ benefits's to work for Planned Parenthood based on their experience? Here is their new grad compensation package (union, non-negotiable- ALL new grads as equal regardless of RN experience):

$41.05 to start, then after training (min of 90-120 days of on boarding) and meeting productivity of 22-24 pts daily it goes up to $43.13, if you work Saturday (1 required per month) you get a whopping $2.50 shift diff. $1500 and 30 hrs yearly for CME, 13 days PTO, 12 days sick, 8 paid holidays. 100% malpractice with tail, will assist with cost for obtaining DEA and NPI."

Thank you!

Hello!!!

I would wait to pass your boards before applying. I don’t know what state you are in but in California where I’m at the state board processing time is probably at least 3-4 months, they are very slow!! I think they will take pending licenses but i know at my interview they told me they were having a hard time with new grads not being able to start because of the delay. As for benefits you have to work a minimum of 30 hours to qualify for medical/dental so you would have to work 4 days. I did not see anything about unions in my packet, so no unions in CA. The pay rate was $55 but it just increased to $58/hr in San Diego. So as a new grad I will make $58/hr for 40!hours per week. I have to see 27-30 patients. Work 2 Saturdays for full time. The rest of what you said it correct.

I can’t say about other parts of the country. Your rates sound low.

Planned Parenthood in San Diego hires flex positions first, which means I will work within 3 locations. Then when an internal permanent location position opens I can apply to that. So you might have to travel in the beginning anyhow.

Just apply to both and see!!!
