Well, the material's there in the book so mostly I'd suggest reading it and pondering it so that you own it.
Read the end-of-chapter reviews.
Read the section headings and see if you can describe what's in there.
Make up mind-maps/concept-maps for yourself.
Flashcards, flashcards, flashcards...
Know your terms (regardless of its source, there is some merit to the statement, "The only reason a person... becomes confused... is because he or she has gone past a word that was not understood," at least in coherently and logically presented material)
If you can't clearly articulate an answer to a question that you pose to yourself then you don't really know the answer.
Some random thoughts that apply to learning in general.

I purchased the Illustrated Study Guide for the NCLEX-RN exam and it broke down our med surge concepts.
Good luck.

There was an app for ipad by istud I think that's the name. It's neat, it groups the flash cards in groups and you can even divide it into sections such as test 1 or test 2. I have pretty much all the med-surg supplemental books by Hogan, Hurst, Davis, and the med-surg incredibly made easy.

Specifically, it is helpful to know one reference book inside and out, having read the same presentation over and over until it sticks, sometimes even to a point where you can sometimes visualize the page layout.
Jumping from book to book can create inefficiencies - and sometimes confusion.
As a long-time student and tutor, I generally encourage people to pick one resource and stick with it rather than jumping from book to book (which we do sometimes as a form of escapism from disquiet engendered by studying something very challenging... rather than wrestling with what's in front of us, we launch on a search for something better... which often ends up wasting time and revealing something that is just... different... but not any better).
