HELP! It's Not SINKING IN!

Please, please help me. I am having a hard time remembering things. During A&P I, I was having trouble absorbing things - memorizing stuff. Just tossed it up as pre-occupied by work & home. Well, now I am not working & have a test on my first day of nursing school - Monday on prefixes & suffixes. Although I am trying to memorize them & am writing them 10 times each, IT"S NOT STICKING.

Any suggestions? Maybe it's age (33)? Hope not.

Two things that I did was make flash cards and think of silly things that they reminded me of. The prefix retro which means BEHIND reminded me of the 70's, so it made me think of someone that still dressed this way. They were BEHIND the times.

It's just an example of how my sick little mind works, hope it helps.

For me writing does no good. I have to read things over and over and over and over and over....ad nauseum. But eventually it sticks. You just say it to yourself and check against the correct answer. Does that make sense?

What kind of prefixes and suffixes are they testing you on, may I ask? And how did you know you were having a test the first day? Is it on your syllabus or did they send you something? The reason I ask is because I have not yet got my syllabi, and probably won't have my books til Mon (classes start Tues for me)...so if something like that occurs, I'm SOL...

Good luck getting your stuff to stick...I think you just have to find what works best. Oh, I meant to tell you I put my info on flash cards in order to read them...

Tape your classes...find a favorite place to study... use earphones.... so its just YOU and the Prof.

these things help! *****hugs... you'll be ok honey

Are you eating nutritious food? That always helps me. I can tell a big difference if I just eat junk food compared to trying to eat a balance meal. Just a thought.

Jen,

Flash cards are a definate!!! Secondly, you may know more then you think. Sometimes nerves are a killer and interfer with your thought process. Try taking a break for a while and then pick up the flash cards and test yourself or have someone else test you if possible. Another thing that I found that works is word association. For example the prefix "a" means without - I think of asexual. Without sex. Just an example.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I do - do the flashcard things. It helps sometimes.

Do I eat right? I am trying. Drinking more h2o & stuff. Need my VCOKE to get me through the day though. I heard that hard candy, jolly ranchers help your memory. Anyone for watermelon?

When I met w/ my director to register me for classes, she handed me a 4 page list w/ prefixes, suff & combination words. And said, memorize this, you will have a short test on the first day of class.:(

1. I will try & eat better.

2. I will use more flashcards.

3. I will write/read, over & over & over & over again.

4. I will use headphones & tape record my class

5. AND I WILL DO OK. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can;)

Thanks everyone.

My nursing program has its own method that they have used for when students aren't doing well no matter how much they study. Last year they put the people having trouble through this course and the results were so good, they just did it for everyone in my class. I see it making a difference already just reading my first chapter. Some people have different learning styles that even the best flashcards won't help. There's a book that they gave us and its real quick tests on your learning styles and you'd be suprised at which one you really are. And then it tells you how you should go about studying.

wouldn't hurt to try it!

Good luck.

Mnemonics, I swear by them! It is the only way I can remember things. For example to remember the 5 rights for drug administration here's how I remember it

Dopey (D for Drug -right Drugh)

People (P for Patient -right Patient)

Don't (D for Dosage -right Dosage)

Remember (R for Route -right Route)

Things (T for Time -right Time)

It sometimes takes me a while to come up with something that will stick, but once I think of something catchy I usually can remember it.

My school requires that book too and I have recommended it to everyone I know.

What helps me is telling my husband stuff. For instance when I was in A&P I and studying the digestive system, we would be getting ready for work or bed or whatever and I would casually mention something like..."did you know that carbohydrates are actually begun to be digested in the mouth by the amylase in our saliva? Did you know that saliva is actually called salivary amylase? Oh...and you know that the food is called 'bolis' when it's been chewed and swallowed...up until it is in the stomach & then it's called chyme?"

Yep, a lot of it probably sailed over his head, but he did learn some things (whether he wanted to or not) and it helped drive home the facts to me, simply by relating the information! :)

I like to give myself sample tests. I have a test on Monday on prefix and suffix and I typed up all of the pref & suffixes with and empty space next to them. I printed out 10 copies. First I study my flash cards and then TEST MYSELF. Have you ever noticed that after you get you results to a test, you always remember the ones you missed! Study and test yourself, by the time you get to class you'll fly through the test!

Good luck!
