Help my illinois license will expire on may 31, 2008

Can you suggest a state where i can apply licensure by endorsement that does not ask for a SSN, coz my illinois license is about to expire on may 31, 2008 and i am still here in the Philippines. Illinois will also not renew license without a SSN and i want to maintain an active license even with other states. Thank you.

VT BON would be a good choice. They evaluate transcripts on their own, does not require a US SSN and if I'm not mistaken they accept CGFNS Certification or CES if your transcripts (kindly double check on their endorsement reqts) have been evaluated by any of those programs already.

May I know how long IL's expiration was? Also, you should be aware that when you endorse to another State, they will also have short expiration dates for their initial licenses as well for foreign-educated nurses.

Every Illinois license expire on may 31 of each even-numbered year regardless of when it was issued.

I tried checking the website of vermont for licensure by endorsement and I saw a part on the application form asking for details re active nursing practice of at least 50 days in the last 2 yrs or 120 days in the last 5 yrs, also place and date of employment. Are these required? Because to date i have no nursing experience...I graduated oct 2006 and did not take local board in the philippines. What can you suggest?

Well, the instructions for applying for licensure by endorsement say that you "must" submit this information, so, yes, it's required. If you don't have any hours of practice, you may not be eligible for a VT license ...

More and more US states are refusing to issue licenses to people who haven't been practicing recently as a nurse. To me, it just makes sense. The mission and purpose of each state BON is to protect the public by regulating the practice of nursing in the state, and it seems logical to question whether someone who hasn't practiced as a nurse at all in two years is safe and competent to practice.

If you contact the BON directly, they may have some info about other ways you could qualify (completing a refresher course, or something).

Unfortunately, VT requires a local license as part of their req't. Scrap VT on your list.

This is another reason why I keep telling everyone now to get their local license done. Without it, you cannot practice in your country, nor go to any other country.

And if the US begins to require the local license again for immigration, you are going to need to take it before they will consider you for a visa. We are expecting that to happen as more and more states are now requiring the local license again, as it was required when the CGFNS exam was written first.

No other country will let you practice there without a local license, so you are unable to get any experience as an RN. And if your license is expiring here, it means that you have been out of school for sometime.

I would try to get the NLE taken now and passed.

I was never opposed to it, but stated that it was not needed at the time for licensure in the US. That was a couple of years ago and things always do change.

And the issue was always if you wrote the exam, and then did not pass it, you could not get the VSC. And that is what was meant by it. But there has been a retrogression since October, 2006 and now with an expected wait of several years for the visa, a nurse needs to get experience. And many more graduates coming out of your country now than there were two to three years ago, so it will make it harder for all to get the green card for the US.

Any other country requires the local license to be able to get a job there now. Two years ago and there were all different types of visas available for you as well.

Since yours is expiring really soon, you may want to find another State BON to endorse to fast. VT is definitely out. Try NM since you already have a CES on hand.

It would have been better if it's not less than 2 mos. from expiry, so that we can have more time to assess w/c options are best.

hmm.. question, let's say the license expired already... can you still use that for endorsement or reciprocity?

I want to apply in NY but since my CVS won't be done by May can I still use my NCLEX score or do I need to take it again?

There is no reciprocity. You will never see an application form that says Licensure by Reciprocity.

If it's expired, you may send a copy of the test results. If it's an unexpired license, you send and use the License Verification Form.

A lot also depends on where you intend to endorse or in this case apply for initial licensure. All foreign-educated nurses goes through CVS for NY and fill in their application form. Usually, there is a separate Licensure by Examination Form and a Licensure by Endorsement Form but some States do not have these if for foreign-educated nurses. VT is a good example.. the Application Form is one and the same. NY is this way as well thru the CVS process, unless they have recently changed it.

Some States, such as CA, requires that you send transcripts coming from the school again if endorsing to them. Practically the same procedure as if applying to them initially by examination. They will accept CGFNS, CES or whatever from the previous State but them requiring the transcripts coming from the school again just means that they still will do their own evaluation and everything else is just an additional proof.

Going back to CVS for NY, if you applied to them and at that time your license is expired, I don't think you can write there that you still hold a license. Suzanne can clarify this for you. But it isn't really an issue if you have an expired one or not anyway for CVS for NY as a result of the CVS process itself. Just give them proof you took the NCLEX already and passed it, so that you won't take it again.

To use the License by Endorsement process, it must be an active license. If it is not active, then it cannot be used.
