Help!! Feeling lost!

Nursing Students General Students

I just failed my final exam in nursing 4 at a community college which was my last semester of nursing school!! I ended up with a 74.4 and needed a 75% to pass!! Before I started nursing school at the community college which by the way I was in the LPN to RN transition program I was at a private school in Orlando in a generic ADN program so, this was my second go around in nursing school!! I am having some serious thoughts about not continuing and going a different route but, stay in the health care field because its all I know at this point. I am 28 years old and don't have any experience under my belt so, I am worried about getting a job if I continue in nursing. I am really really worried that employers are really go to frown up the fact that I have been in nursing school for almost 4 years and I don't have any experience! Anyways, I am just wondering what are some other options in the health care field that I can look into? I know there is respiratory therapy, dental hygiene? I am feeling very lost and overwhelmed! don't know what to do... I thought nursing was my passion but, I can't seem to get past nursing school! Your probably thinking that this girl is crazy for being in nursing school for almost 4 years!! I just want to get my degree!!

Deep breath.

I would look at all of your credits, and go to your academic advisor, and go over everything. See if there's a degree you can make out of what you have.

If you are an LPN, there may be some job opportunity in that where you are at present.

I would suggest doing a summer EMT program, and that is something you could do part time.

I would also suggest speaking with your academic advisor on if you could do an extra credit paper or something to make up the 6/10th of a point you would need to pass the course. Or ask that the test be audited.

The old bat jaded part of me will tell you that schools have a way of wanting to make money, as they are a business. By making you take and entire course again is a money making scheme. They will, however, make you wait until you can get some federal monies via a fafsa though....and your student loan ratio goes wayyyy up.

If you can obtain a position that has tuition reimbursement, all the better.

With four years of schooling under your belt, you may have a bachelors degree in something and not even realize it--even if it is in liberal arts, it is something. Specialize in a master's program. You could do informatics nursing. You could do case management. You could get a masters in education and teach. Dental hygiene is a tough gig, and I think harder than one would think. Respiratory therapy is also specialized, and eh, either you like it or you don't. I would broaden on the LPN you have if possible, and top it off with pre hospital care such as an emt to medic or something of that nature.

But you need to make an appointment with your academic advisor and see what you have, what you need, and where to go from here.

Best wishes!

Can you not retake class ?

Yes, I can retake class. But, what if I don't pass again? I don't want to be in nursing school anymore! I need to start working!

Specializes in LTC, Med-surg.

What's wrong with retaking the class? I have known 10 other nursing students including myself who retook a class and came out victorious!

I am about to graduate in one month. Lots of people retake a class and find that the second time around, the material just stuck better

and they comprehended the material fully.

I suggest retaking the class. Next time, put your heart and soul into studying. Buy NCLEX-RN review books, look up

every question you can find on the content that you are being tested on before taking the exam. Those two suggestions

alone will help bump your grade.

Retake the course and stop with the what if....you can do this....you know what you did wrong...now pick yourself up dust yourself off and get it done! No more pity party...you are young and employers just want to know....do you have your degree and did you pass nclex! Get a part time job working as an lpn for experience! You can do this!
