Help with endorsement in Indiana

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

So here is my issue. I went to a ASN program here in Indiana and graduated back in December of 2017 and took the NCLEX 3 times with 265 questions each to fail. I was never below average on any topic but obviously not well enough to pass either. So after getting some advice on here about states that would allow me to sit for the LPN boards I took the NCLEX for LPN through another state and passed with 85 questions and was so excited until I tried to transfer by endorsement back to Indiana and they told me that I can't because I didn't graduate from an accredited LPN program. The state board recommended that I go back and take the two courses that the LPN's took and they would be glad to issue me my license here in Indiana. I wasn't happy about that but I was determined so I called my nursing school and they said no and then I called every other nursing school in the state and they also said no. They said if I wanted to do it I would have to start all over. So I called the state board back and they said there is nothing they can do to help me. I could drive to any of the surrounding states to work but that's not what I want to do. There has got to be something I can do to fix this mess that I am in. I am also still studying and hoping to take and pass my RN boards but it sure did feel nice to have a backup plan so that my education for 3 years didn't go to waste. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, the board prevails. What school did you go to?

So your school doesnt prep you for nclex?

Some schools offer a curriculum that is designed to allow an RN student to sit the LPN NCLEX partway through the course but some if not most do not. You must have attended a school that didn't offer that option so classes needed to be considered an LPN graduate in Indiana weren't available during the portion of the curriculum that would otherwise qualify you to take the NCLEX as an LPN even though your credits were accepted for a different state.

Options are probably pretty limited here. It looks like you have already approached other schools to try to take just the needed classes and were turned down. Does the program you graduated from offer those classes at all or is the entire program not accredited in Indiana?

Another option, though it might be time consuming is to check with the IN BON to see if you can get your LPN license by endorsement after a certain number of practice hours as a working nurse. This would of course require you to work in the state you are currently licensed in until those hours have been met.

I recently read where Indiana and Kentucky would be part of the compact nursing states as of 7/1/19 if that helps.

I just got the email notice from BoN, they will start the process 7/1/19, it may take up to 12 months to get everything in order.

Sadly the article omitted that part...I was planning on moving there at the end of the summer. Nothing definite, just kicking it around

Move here, there are jobs, and it will go through, just taking a little time
