I live in Fort Worth which is 5 hours from Houston. Don't know much about the Texas Heart but I just wanted to say "hello"!! Texas is a great place to live. Good luck to you!!

I work in a med/surg icu at St. Luke's. Texas Heart Institute is part of St. Luke's. I think it is one of the best hospitals to work at. High quality care and nice people.

I'm a new grad so I don't have experience anywhere else, but all the employees tell me I started at the best.

I have also worked at St. Luke's/Texas Heart Institute and unfortunately my experience was not as good. To clarify...the things they do there are absolutely amazing. I would not feel more comfortable being treated anywhere else. In that respect, they live up to their reputation. Unfortunately, as an employee, I was not as impressed. There did not seem to be a lot of team spirit among the nurses in the units I worked on. I will refrain from being specific. St. Luke's/THI hires the best of the best...and even after hire, the nurses seem to remain very competitive. I was unable to work in that type of environment and chose to work elsewhere. Granted I only have experience in the two units I worked in (both critical care units) and I am sure there are other units in the facility where the nurses work well together.

Just my two cents.

I read your post re St Lukes. I am a nurse in Maryland and I am looking to move to Houston in a year and work specifically for St Lukes Texas Heart. I was just wondering if you are still there and how things are going. Any advice for new comers. I will have 2 years open heart nursing experience and 5 years overall nursing.

Just to make some clarifications. St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital and Texas Heart Institute are two different entities, but are exclusive to each other. For instance, if you come here as a patient to have heart surgery, your nursing care is provided by St. Luke's. THI is primarily a research entity, and all research done for CV surgery is done through them. If you are interested in research positions you would be employed by THI. I used to work in St. Luke's CVRR and loved it, and I have worked in every one of the critical care units here (there are eleven). It is intense and the some of the personalities there certainly match that sometimes(more so on the day shift), but if you are used to that type of environment then it should not be too much of a culture shock. The learning curve there is superior, and frequently nurses there leave to persue degrees of higher learning. Feel free to explore their website. http://www.sleh.com You can access Texas Heart Institute from there.

St. Luke's is a wonderful place to work, not too large that it looses the family atmosphere. When I moved to Houston in 1992, I choose St. Luke's because of it's shared governance support of professional nursing. Nurse's are respected and are a member of the interdisciplinary patient care team. St. Luke's Nursing has been recognized with many accolades, including the Magnet Award, and for nursing research and patient care. It's a choice. And I choose to work for St. Luke's Episcopal Health System in Houston. The nursing opportunities are as diverse as the areas of nursing.

I work in one of the ICUs at St. Luke's and LOVE IT. I've been on a few floors as a student and loved everywhere I've been. The people are great - so many people that work there just never leave.

as a foreign-trained nurse that has not taken the nclex exam, it will be almost impossible for you to get hired by them, i do not suggest even applying until you take and pass the nclex exam. the more reputable facilities will not even look at you without having the nclex exam completed.

noticed from your other post that you will be coming over on a fiancee visa....again, highly recommend that you take and pass the nclex exam first before even starting to apply anywhere. please check out the international forum here, as well as the nclex forum.
