Hi Tanya - I'm a UK RN who should be emigrating to Florida this year (retrogression etc aside).

I strongly suggest that you go and check out all the "stickies" (that's the top posts) on both the UK & the International forums here (you can find them by using the "forum jump" facility at the bottom of the page. I'm sure that you will find all the info you want there. Feel free to PM me (or anyone else for that matter) if you like. Plenty on here about moving check out this thread https://allnurses.com/forums/f75/primer-all-wish-work-us-160143.html plus plenty of reading on both here and the UK forum. Lots of us currently going through the process to various parts of the US. Just be prepared for plenty of patience as it is a long journey

i am prepared for a long journey, but i don't mind, as it will give my kids the chance the get a bit older and not need me 24/7 when we finally get there.

Welcome from me too from Vero Beach in Florida. I have been here 14 months now and we are really happy here.....took a long time to get here so you need the patience of a Saint...but once you are settled it is worth it.....fire away with any questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability based on my experiences

Good choice!

I came here to FL 5 years ago from UK. I did some research in the nursing times and went for a couple of interviews. I managed to find a hospital to employ me and sponser my visa along with my husband and 2 children's. I didn't even have to sign a fixed contact with that hospital, so left them after a year to go my own way.

The sponsering hosp did all the paperwork, and arranged legal assistance with visa etc. We all got permanent residency cards. It took a couple of years to complete the process before we got on the plane but I can honestly say I haven't looked back once.

My kids are now 15 and 17 and both consider themselves "americans" - even though the initial adjustment was a bit trying at times.

My advice is: do plenty of research - don't take the first offer you get. The american hospitals can be pushy at first but will wait for you - they are just as short for nurses as the UK. Don't judge on pay alone - the better paid jobs are the ones that can't keep staff! It was hard getting used to the fact that you name your salary to a certasin degree.

Yes my first hospital that sponsored me paid very well in comparison to others but unfortunatley they cant keep their staff.....I now work literally 2 minutes up the road for slightly less pay but better working conditions...they usually pay you by years of experience.....sign on bonus is good if you can get it but not all hospitals do.

it took me 3 years to get over here - you need a lot of patience and be prepared for every evetuality!
