HELLLLLLLOOOOO, Retirement !

Nurses Retired

Published

This is my first day that I can say I'm retired. Even though the first day that I did not go into work was... what do ya know?: The First Day of Spring!

So, I saw a couple of my good friends here- TriciaJ and Daisy4RN- and thought I'd come hang out in this forum a bit, relate, stir things up, cause some trouble, and whatnot.

So: When did you really feel like you were retired? Nursing has been a very big part of our lives for decades and now we have to kind of let it go; a transition, a grieving process, if you will.

I haven't received my first SS check yet and I've still got a paycheck coming from Wrongway of time worked, accrued vacation, and PTO. I'm thinking when I receive my first SS check, I'll feel retired.

Probably an oft asked question on this forum, but: When did you finally feel truly retired from the nursing profession?

About two weeks before I was Fired & Retired, I Goggled the word "retirement" and came up with a website that caters to retired folks.

They are a fun group and have a two year old thread titled "Coffee Corner", so I've submitted a few comics:

100% agree with the coffee. I feel like it is a life-giving fluid necessary to fuel the day. I consider it "nurse fuel". I can't decide which of the above three I like more. Honestly it is all of them.

"Long Live Coffee" should be the mantra.

I received a note via the post yesterday from my high school sweetie, Racol, who I haven't spoken to in 20 years. We talked on the telephone for a little over an hour, mostly playing catch up. It was really nice.

Since I've retired, one of the first things I do when I get up is to take a little walk. This morning however, I went for a short bicycle ride and this happened:

At times I think some days and months trudge on without end in sight, then I realize how long I've been somewhere or how long ago something happened or the edge of someone I knew since they were born and come to realize how quickly time passes by. I have seen it said days can seem to last forever at times but years go by quickly.

A line from the movie "The Wizard of Loneliness", spoken by the old Doctor: "Time passes so quickly, it whistles in your ears".

LOL

this reminds me of something someone once said to me, it went something like this:

When you are a baby you need your parents

when you are in your 20's you need looks

when you are in your 30's you need personality

when you are in your 40's and beyond you need money

One of the great things about retirement is that I've reconnected with my best childhood buddy and we're doing some of the same things we use to do as kids.

Since it's nearing the 4th of July, we played a game of Cowpie Chicken!

Thank you, Hoosier, I am enjoying retirement and reconnecting with old friends.

The other day, my best childhood chum, Rad and I, sat in rocking chairs on his farmhouse porch and had a deep, meaningful conversation that lasted all morning!

When I retire in a few months, I will be moving "back home" to be near my family. I have already seen a few childhood friends there as I have visited and made arrangements for housing, etc. and some of us have connected on facebook. It's comforting to know that I will be seeing some old friends after I move.
