what the HECK is PBDS?

Thread titled PERFORMANCE BASED DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM has lots of info...it is lengthy but worth reading through. Post 58 tell you info on diagnosis for medsurg. Post 76 on page 8 has a link with the medsurg diagnosis listed. I tried to post it here but can't. If you go there the link works.Also someone said Dr.DelBueno wrote an article on the PBDS(hints included in article) in Nursing Perspective magazine put out by the NLN sept/oct issue 2005. I found some info on the article but cannot get a copy. The website said some hosp libraries or schools of nursing might have it in their online subscriptions. Does anyone hava a copy...if so I would appreciate it. The hosp library here doesnt have it.

I have had to take the PBDS twice. I agree with NurseguyFL in that it is not within our scope of practice to make medical diagnoses. I will ALWAYS ask, now, if a PBDS is required at any hospital I consider going to. No way can I afford to "fail" this test, and end up with no job. What I found interesting is that the last job I had, where I had to take this test, most of the floor was staffed with travelers. Terrible job...couldn't wait to get through my 13 weeks. Almost broke my contract once or twice, but that goes against my ethics. Couldn't figure out how this hospital could demand such a test when they had such dire needs. Still doesn't make sense to me. All I know now this that NO WAY would I take that test again. Too stressful! This gal is getting too old for those kind of (what I consider) un-necessary games!:angryfire Just MHO!

If they give you 30 seconds to evaluate the pt, and a few minutes to diagnose, document, etc. perhaps that's what they expect from the patient loads they have on the units.

Maybe that's why, because they didn't have any staff, they had to make sure what they did have, the travelers, could handle whatever happened.

PBDS will make you feel like this :crash_comwhen you are done taking it!! I had to take the PBDS - (ICU) for a contract in Oregon. For travelers the test was contract dependent however for staff it was a precepting tool. Either way it was a terrible test. NurseguyFL did a nice job describing and advising on the test!! The test I took was all on the computer and timed. I believe it was like 5 hours long. The worst part was right before I took the test - the lady says to me - good luck we just had a few people fail it. Thanks - I thought to myself!! Definitely - keep your answers focused and bulletin points!! Go through the steps in your head - what you would do as you enter the room - start with your basic BLS - assess ABC's - oxygen,monitor,IV - do not assume that anything is a given!! The hospital sends the test out to a company who grades the test. I took the test in the morning and found out later in the afternoon that I had passed. I spoke with the individual proctoring the test and suggested that they speak with administration to work with an outside testing site such as Sylvan learning centers to make this test a little more traveler friendly. They seemed to understand my points - why waste our time or theirs!!

I am an ER traveler but the first place I had to do PBDS was a local (close to my home) hospital that I was just going to pick up some shifts when I was home. This hospital has some major staffing problems and now I see why. Then after I took the darned thing the nurse ed. made me feel like a worthless nurse. I told her and HR that I did not need this. I have been in nursing for 20 years and I do not need her making me feel inept. After that I have taken it at several assignments and they are about the same but the folks were much nicer. It does not tell what kind of nurse a person is. I also told that useless nurse ed. that I do not dx and I would never expect anyone to make a dx on that little bit of info. As a matter of fact, making that dx could be dangerous. She said " well that may be all you get when you see the pt." I said but as I went along I would be continually evaluating the patient! It was a terrible experience.:angryfire

hello everyone,

I also took the pbds at my current job. that is what we were all told its a assisment tool , forget it its not.

its a pass fail deal, i did pass it the first time was told that i failed it i had to sit through 10 weeks of training to retest. there is no way anyone can pass this without some kind of avdance study i felt it was a set up for failure.

I had to take this test, about 4-5 hours long, as a GN and failed. So I had to retake it again, another 4-5 hours. It's almost like the hospital is testing your tolerance rather than your knowledge. I'd rather take boards any day!! I agree, it is a poor tool to evaluate someone's abilities. The time factor alone is unacceptable. I've seen the videos since then at other hospitals. They used them as a learning tool not an examination.

Hi all

I have to take PBDS this week I've been an LPN for 19 years and worked at this hospital for 5 years, I had to quit to take care of family, I've been gone a year. I've never been written up or had an infraction of any kind in my record.They just started this "evaluation" system shortly before I left there, Only new hires have to take it.
