Nurses Stress 101

Published

Greetings. Deb is going to put a sticky on this thread and eventually delete the other.

This is the thread where members come to share their journey to wellness and wholeness.

It's a holistic thread, talking about all apects of health, not just diet and exercise, but the mind and spirit as well. All posters are welcome (not just Premium Members) and encouraged on a periodic basis to share what you're doing, what you need to do and how you're going to do it, and what you know!

Hi sddlnscp - I'm glad to hear that you are back on track, that the stressors are reduced, and that you'll be okay now!:yelclap: :yeah:

Keep listening the sounds of nature and enjoy all the blooming flowers! Do you live in the country?

hi tweety ~

had i known about this (what you wrote today): "i'm going to ask a mod to close this thread (part-2) and then delete it in a few days." -

i would have spent my time choosing a different-thread to post my contributions in, re: *how to de-stress, and enjoy more closely the life of your finest dreams*.

until i know a better thread to move my original post to, please excuse my (edited) re-posting here. some person/nurse may actually wanna give my helpful-ideas a go...! "hi wonka ~

we don't pay attention to: calories, this or that, and our family is healthy, active & slim. the way we achieve/maintain this is:

first, we gratefully eat foods simply as god created them for us: organic-veggies (in chef-salads, or baked), and fruits (raw, or in smoothies), baked/grilled meats/fish, tea - and too, we also enjoy foods like avocadoes, sour cream, our homemade cheese-cake & fudge. yet, like i said, at 110 - i'm not challenged weight-wise, even at 55 yrs. chronologically. (well, truth be told, i'm 5.5 yrs. young l :D l ) - hey, whatever succeeds, eh?

further, we do take a comprehensive mv-m, (and rarely abo's followed by acidophilus-bifidus replacement supplementations). but no other meds, of any kind.

and of diseases, we remain free. imagine, you can expect it also, and your *mind* (beyond your brain) will create what you want, and pay attention to... yup, you can have your cake and eat it to too!

you've probably figgered this out already, and it's true: (crime&accidents aside), what you choose to want & expect, your own mind will set-out to create as your *repeated/perpetual* reality...

how often have you noticed this already also?

welcome, cheerfulsong! i'd love to hear more about your skating!

well tho i have not won any "*metal*-medals", (our skating friends think of my own story as remarkably inspirational) -

*ice-skating* is wonderful !! exercise: i know of many skaters who (as adults) began out of concern for their spine, decreasing-flexibility, strength, balance & endurance - who not only re-gained their former abilities, but exceed them now - including more dependable bone-density, yeah!

currently i am learning skills in all 4 basic-classes, that our private coach is helping me gain. (my coach was a *senior lady* in her day (you know, the kind you see on tv - at "nationals"). i surely appreciate & love her!

might you be interested in knowing more, there's the

1. recreational-journey, with isi: http://www.skateisi.com/html/skprog/skprog_learn.cfm

or the

2. competitive-track, with usfsa: http://www.usfigureskating.org/programs.asp?id=47

as you can see, both have a "basic-skills program" to get you going; as well, both offer competitions for those people interested in that fun.

i'll be pleased to share with you, more! enjoy!

Hi sddlnscp - I'm glad to hear that you are back on track, that the stressors are reduced, and that you'll be okay now!:yelclap: :yeah:

Thanks! Yes, I definitely live in the country. My town hosts a population of about 60 people (not hundred or thousand, just 60). It's very peaceful and serene, I love it! We live in an area deemed 'high-desert' - which is mostly dry grass/ranch/farm land. It's very nice - I live 21 miles from work and it takes me exactly 21 minutes to get here because there is virtually no traffic on our little old 2-lane highway. Sometimes it can be depressing because you feel that you have stepped back in time, we don't have much for technology out here (cell phones don't even work here), but sometimes it just adds to the serenity of the place. I could not ever picture myself back in the city again, I have lived here for about 14 years and I absolutely adore it!

How about you? What are your surroundings like?

Well - I managed to avoid a horrible craving for a nestle crunch bar yesterday afternoon (it was given to me by a client and I very quickly handed it to my boss as soon as my client was out of sight), which is a huge victory for me (normally I would have immediately eaten it) - so yeay! I am optimistic and smiling today, ready to take on the world . . . er . . . at least work. :D

Nice to see a new thread! :) Tweety, thanks for your advice before on good vs. bad fats...makes sense definitely to significantly limit trans fats in our diets! I am excited that olive oil is one of the healthier options, though I feel like I've seen a bit about sunflower oil lately too, so I've been trying to learn more about it. Not sure if it is as much something that we cook with or something to look for as an ingredient instead of the saturated fats in the foods that we eat!

I was good and did 40 minutes of aerobics and weights at the gym today.

Probably not going to eat healthy today because it's Saturday. I'm going to cheat today. hehehe

I got kinda bummed out yesterday. I am done with this semester next week (yay) and looking forward to being able to be active more than 4 times a week.

I enjoy running, biking and swimming (used to do triathlons). The running and biking are easy...I have a mtn and road bike and running shoes. The swimming is tougher because I need a pool.

I was excited about using the community college pool which I can attend for free as a student but I found out yesterday that their summer hours stink! They are only open 1 hour in the morn (6am-7am) and again in the eve (5pm-7pm) and Sat 1-4; they cut out the 11a-1p opening each weekday during the summer. I work 2nd shift and that is just not gonna work! boo - I was really, really wanting to hit the pool a few days a week. I figure I can go on Sat and on my one evening off/week and I guess that will have to do.

I was just sooo looking forward to doing this, this news kinda burst my bubble. :(

I am off to work soon...today was an exercise "off" day but it's gorgeous out so I will enjoy driving to work kinda slow with the windows open. I love living out in the country. :)

rn2be, the city here has a nice olympic sized pool with good hours that I've been thinking about using. It's not free but it's nice, and it's heated in the winter, so it's open year around. Maybe when I finish school and am not so busy. Bummer you can't enjoy it more.

I went to yoga this morning and was a bit stiff, but I guess that's why I go. :)

Swimming sounds fantastic - wish we had a pool in our town. Oh well - my semester just ended, so I have until the end of the month free and think I will use it to clean house and start an exercise routine . . . walking in the evenings. :)

I worked out today, weights and 40 minutes of aerobics.

Didn't eat good because I went to a banquet. I had a huge salad, but lots of desserts. Hmmmm..........

LOL Tweety - well, hopefully the salad helped to cancel out the desserts. :D I did eat pretty good yesterday and am proud of myself for resisting the temptation of a whole package of snickers bars that were staring at me from the fridge when I got home (darn husband - I love him to death, but dang, does he have to put that right in my eyesight?). Anyway, I am getting better at avoiding those temptations, so that is really great!

I swear I am about to lose my mind - the college said that they sent out acceptance/decline letters last Friday, but I still haven't gotten anything. We had been missing our mail for two days in a row because our dingy postmaster accidentally put it in the wrong box, so I hope it didn't get lost. Aaaaargh - talk about stress! I hope it shows up soon before I go insane!

Sarah - I hope you get your letter soon! Stress is no fun. :(

Tweety - I hate when that happens. I usually enjoy it in the moment but then feel guilty afterward. But at the same time, I think that a little splurge is a good thing as long as it's not every meal. :)

Also, I see you do a lot of yoga. It has always intrigued me. I went to a class once and became so relaxed that I fell asleep at the end. I went out and got a book to try to do it at home but somehow it wasn't the same as my gym experience (maybe I need to be in a place I feel I can relax more, which isn't home since I get distracted by noise, books, dust). I just don't have the $$ or time right now to add anything to my repertoire, though.

Jen, I love yoga, and it is indeed an expense. I buy 20 classes for $140.00 which is "only" $7.00 a class but is a bargain in this area. If you buy it one class at a time it's $10.00, but it's much more at other studios in this town. Also buying in bulk commits me to going. It's a trick I play with myself when I buy my gym members, I pay for three years at a time.

There are some good yoga vidoes out there, but not the same as going to a class. I get too distracted when I'm doing it at home. I am only able to go 3 times in a two-week cycle, but that's better than nothing.
