HBU Fall 09 Admissions

U.S.A. Texas

Hey TX Nurses!

I read a few pages back about HBU admissions for the Fall, but I wanted to resurrect the thread. I am really excited to have the admissions process over with, because it seems a lot less cut and dry than other schools, with first going through general admission, then nursing.

I spoke with a general admissions counselor because I was unable to reach anyone in the nursing school, and she said all of the nursing applications were just sent over so they are flooded with paperwork. Has anyone seen an adviser in the CON who has a good handle on the process?

I was applying to the ADN program. I have a BA already from Baylor, so I met the religion, english, and psyhcology course prereqs and am taking the A&P I in the summer and A&P II, Micro, and Growth & Development in the fall. I thought that the prereqs were part of the ADN program. It seems kind of hazy to me - I'll be taking those classes in the fall regardless if I'm admitted, but I'm confused as to whether or not the prereqs are part of the program or necessary to complete before admissions. I know 99% of other nursing programs require the prereqs, so I thought HBU would be a good fit for me since I needed to take the prereqs and I wanted to start now.

I hope this is all clear - my questions are about who has gone/is going through the admissions process and how they are fairing, and whether or not the prereqs are part of the program. I'm still trying to get through to a nursing adviser, so I'll get the answer somehow. But I love these forums! It's nice to know there are so many people in the same boat as I am transitioning to nursing school from another field (well, I work in health care, but in administration).

Thanks for reading!

I am trying to apply there as well for Spring Admission...it sounds like we are in the same boat. I have a bachelors degree in education and I want to apply to both their BSN and their ADN...but the ADN Program requires only fall admission. I have to take all the same pre-req's. Where did you take the pre-reqs? I am taking them at San Jac for the summer, but I have to take A and P II and Micro in the fall. If I get accepted then I will take those at HBU. Let me know how it's going for you.

The advisors are not so good at the CON. Never have been. The application process is way more easy than any other school - it's just a ton of waiting once you meet the requirements.

I got accepted this past spring semester. Your right the process is abit easier and you don't have to pay for the application. You still first get accepted into the school and then they forward the app to the SON. They will automatically give you a provost scholarship if your gpa is >3.5 and its worth 6K for a year. I was really excited when I got the acceptance letter for the SON. They don't give you much time to get ready either. My acceptance came in on Nov 14 and orientation was Dec 5th. I must say in all honesty I didnt do my homework. You really need to call them before taking prereqs and find out what they will and will not accept. They were wanting me to petition or retake an english course, a governement course and one other, not to mention the 9 hours of theology classes. Its about 500/hr and to get a bsn I would of been paying student loans back for a long long time regardless of the scholarship. I opted to start the ADN program instead. Then as fate would have it I got accepted at the school I wanted originally, UTMB. That is were I find myself today. HBU though if you dont have another alternative, or if thats just were you have your heart set at is a fine school. It is beautiful and the education there is excellent.. just very costly. Good luck and hope everything goes as well for you.

Thanks so much for you info. It is really inspiring. I too have applied to UTMB and HBU. I am happy to hear about the scholarship. Do you have a Bachelors already? If so are you do the BACC2 at UTMB? I would love to hear how it's going there. I feel overwhelmed with all the applications and "waiting". I know that it's worth it though.

No Bachelors yet. I feel like a professional student though. I have 172 hours prior to starting UTMB. A couple of associates and one certification. (I didnt know what I wanted to do when I was growing up  ). I am doing the traditional program in a sense. I think this is the first time they offer it in the summer and make it 4 consecutive semesters (summer, fall, spring, and summer 2010). In other words its a 15 month program. They describe the bacc2 as being in the mist of a "hurricane" and our program as being in a "whirlwind." It is extremely fast. I got lucky and was given credit for health assessment. We covered that same exact book in 16 weeks, the guys in my class now are covering the same material in 6 weeks. Needless to say I am counting my blessings right now. Oh and I am playing major catch up in my patho/pharm class. I really could not imagine the Bacc2 program. Maybe I just have poor time management skills who knows, but it's a very demanding program. Keep your head up and don't give up, you will get in! If it makes you feel any better there are a few people in our class that got called in at the last minute and never even got interviewed. Heck some didn't even have patho which is supposed to be a requirement to get in.

Hello everybody,

Seems like, I am in the same boat as you all are. I have been attending HBU since Spring 2009. Still taking pre-reqs one after another. Hoping to start by next Spring 2010. Long wait is an uniqueness of HBU. If you are a transfer student. You can't start your clinicals until you complete atleast 12 hours of HBU courses. I am also trying other programs. I just got accepted for Fall 2009 in ORU. Good thing about ORU is you get accepted straight to Nursing Program. Not bad right? Having a second thought.. cuz I am very much confused about HBU nursing program. I have applied at Concordia College as well. If I get acceptance letter from them, without any doubt that will be my first preference. .. Good luck you all.

If I ere you I would go to another school than HBU I went there 2005-2007 waiting to get into nursing school and it was down to one class that I had to wait a whole nother year for and waisting money on classes I did not need just to stay full time. I also knew some nursing students and several of them quit nursing and got another degree and went somewhere else for UT Housto has BS to BSN in one yr. Um and they take 35 students at a time and when my friend was in and she left there were only 2 students left from her class. It is way to expensive to waist time on stupid classes that you don't need for your degree.

Thanks for your feed back. You are absolutely right. That's what is happening to me. Actually, I am working on it. I am also trying to get into other schools, I would definitely quit If I can get into other programs. I know this school is crazy, they just waist student's time and take their money. Which school are you attending right now, may I know?

Lamar University its cheaper and more classes to get what you need done and Im on the waiting list for nursing for fall they accept more students ADN/BSN about 120 nursing students per fall and spring semester. U still have to deal with crap but it's cheaper
