Haven't worked since I graduated

Nurses General Nursing

Updated:   Published

I had graduated nursing school 10 years ago and did not work as a nurse. I want to start my career now since my kids are now in school. My resume has a huge gap of course and no one wants to hire me because of it. I don't know what to do now. Any advice will be appreciated thanks.

Many hospitals have “new grad” residencies, that can apply to anyone under a year or experience. Reach out to some recruiters with these types of programs with your situation. You never know

Most require that the license be less than a year old as well, but never hurts to try

A lot of the HCA facilities will put nurses through their Nurse Residency program if they're drastically switching specialties or have less than a year of hospital experience.

I am a nurse with over 5 years experience but 6 months hospital experience only and they wanted to put me through a Nurse Residency program for a Med Surg position. The nurse recruiter told me that even if someone had 20+ years experience in Long Term Care or Home Health they'd put them through the Nurse Residency program.

No HCA facilities in my vicinity, but from what I've read about them on here, they're not the greatest to work for. I just know the residencies in my area only take newly licensed nurses (<1yr licensure) and no experience. Others mileage may vary

I knew someone who taught a refresher course, and it seemed like a good program — not only because you’ll get your knowledge up-to-date, but also because there is some networking involved. Or at least hearing about different places people have worked, leads for opportunities, etc.

My last employment as a bedside nurse was on 2017 and I got rejected under Nurse Residency because they said it has been a long time since I have that experience. I am really saddened about it, because they just posted they needed some experience but no timeline at all. Wouldn't be the residency termed as 'Training' as well?
