Have any of us "older" students applied for and received a scholarship?

Published

I have applied for scholarships and have begun to wonder. Since I am a non-traditional student, is it even worth it for me to apply for scholarships? I haven't seen very many that are geared toward a non-traditional student and so many seem so difficult for a non-traditional student to obtain that I do not even bother applying for them.

I know there are so many scholarship opportunities out there, so for any of my fellow "non-traditional" students, have any of received a scholarship? Where did you get it from? A search on the web? Your school?

When I was in Dental Hygiene school, I was 26 while most of my classmates were right out of high school. There was one lady older than me, she never would say how much, but one semester there was a thing called the "Hinman" scholarship. It was awarded by teachers to 3 students that they felt deserving and basically paid for 2 semsters of school, except books. I got one spot and she got the other. I think our "non traditionalism" shows dedication. If I were you, I'd apply to EVERYTHING! You just never know! Good luck!

In my searches, I have seen a number of "general" scholarships geared towards more experienced/career changers/non-traditional students. Good luck!

Here is hope!

I applied to everything the gov. and my school offered-even though I didn't feel like it was worthwhile. My DH has a decent job, I already hold a BS, and we own a house. We just don't demonstrate the kind of financial need that most scholarships look for- so I thought. Anyway, I didn't think much about it and lined up my student loans for the semester. One day, I received a revised FA letter from my FA office, informing me that I was the recipient of a general scholarship (no details as to why I got it) from the school in the amount of $1700!!!! It was huge! That will cover almost all of my tuition expenses for my CC and it is good for pre req credits!

Anyway, fill 'em out! I may never know why I was chosen for this scholarship but I'll take it! :yeah:

There was a non-traditional student at my school (40's married male with kids), our school offered a scholarship for, I believe $500 on year. He wrote a great essay and was awarded the money. I remember them announcing it in class and his being so excited because with a family and all money was tight, and now he was going to be able to afford textbooks for the next semester.

I am a nontraditional student and received a $300 scholarship for the fall semester. Apply for everything out there. You never know when you will get lucky and get something. My tuition was 1354.00 this semester and the cost of my books was $685. Every little bit of financial assistance certainly helps.

I applied for and recieved a technical scholarship for this semester that paid for all of my tuition! Non-traditional student here btw =)

I had given up on ever receiving any type of grant or scholarship, so I stopped applying. I'm in my thirties, no kids, middle class, just above all the income restrictions. So I would put everything on the trusty credit card.

Recently I heard about something new, so I applied...and I got a $3000 scholarship for the next year for being a military spouse who will be getting a degree within the next two years. All I have to do is keep my GPA above a 2.0 and seek employment after graduating. Woohoo!

Not one specific applicable link, expecially for holders of previous degrees. It looks more like a lottery of being harrassed from giving your email and phone number out, more than probable financial assistance. Well, for pre-nursing anyway: nursing may offer more possibilities, but many of those have 'catches' of indentured sevices with years of almost no pay. :banghead:

I'm about as "non-traditional" as they get at 39 years old :D and I got an AMAZING scholarship that will pay for 90% of my unmet need until I graduate (and then as long as I graduate with a 3.6...which I intend to....will pay 80% of my unmet need for my graduate program). Including living expenses....I'm having to take out federal student loans for less than 10% of my total costs.

Don't limit yourself to non-traditional student loans, apply to anything that loosely applies. I've not had much luck with the scholarship databases on the web, but I had a lot of great results working with my scholarship office at school. They steered me toward good scholarships and then looked over my essays, helped me prep for interviews....just really helped out. So, my suggestion, is to go and make friends with your scholarship office staff...they're probably very nice folks and have a goldmine of experience for you.

Peace,

Not for pre nursing but nursing school was a free ride and then some. I was invited by my school to apply based on my gps. Wrote an essay and voilà.
