Have any new grads been asked to be in charge?

Published

Hi! I've been an RN for 8 months now & lately the other nurses were asking if I was planning on taking the charge nurse class. I think they are tired of being in charge & want some help. Anyhow, I freaked out and said I wasn't ready yet. But now I'm just thinking about it. I enjoy being a staff nurse and feel like I finally got that role down. I think I'd be so worried being the charge nurse now. How do you other "newbies" feel about this? Thanks!

I started charge after being out of school for 7 months. I had a very short orientation. I loved being in charge and my coworkers told me they loved when I was in charge.

...I was charge in LTC and sorry, I don't like being in charge of 80 pts! Now I am a floor nurse on a floor with 50 beds. I feel like I am ADD and the few times I have been charge the stress was overwhelming. We have classes sporadically(which I didn't attend-schedule conflict) and I checked out the video to watch. But I cringe at the thought. I work nights.

When I grad RN school, my very first job offer was a charge nurse position on a med surg floor. Granted I had been an LPN prior to finishing RN school. I did not take it though. Too much responsibility right out of school.
