Have you ever taken care of a celebrity?

Published

My Cousin Susan took Louis Armstrongs vitals once as a student nurse !!!!!!!!!!!

President Bush, the old guy, came to visit a friend of his in the ICU where I was working a number of years ago. And you can imagine the place was just crawling with secret service guys!! He also introduced himself to all the rest of the patients in the unit while he was there. My patient was basically circling the drain, but he put on a good face for the Pres.! And that's not a HIPPA violation cuz he wasn't a patient, but a visitor. :)

hehe i cant tell you if i took care of a celebrity ;) :chuckle

BTW, it's HIPAA, not HIPPA.

When I took care of the famous pt, it was announced in all the papers and on TV where she was staying. When she died, Jay Leno even told a joke about it that night on The Tonight Show. He mentioned where she was staying, too.

The only info I gave was her name. It was public knowledge what was going on w/ her. So, I don't think HIPAA applies in this case. :D

Why does everyone else get flamed for pointing out spelling errors, and yet you point it out??

I thought the same thing, but decided against correcting (this all to common error) the poster, because I was seriously flamed the last time I corrected a misspeller (another all to common error on this board)

besides this Rush Limbaugh thing will hopefully allow people to relax a little on this HIPAA thing...

IT'S always been about the privacy (w/ some common sense thrown in) people. If you've always been keeping patients' privacy sacred, then RELAX!!!!

Oh... I probably will get flamed. Oh well!

Whenever I read "HIPPA" I imagine a pink, cartoon hippopotamus dancing around in a tu tu.

no flaming here:p

There is way too much misspelling here, there, and everywhere...

besides, we live in a country where 2 out of our last 3 presidents can't correctly pronounce "nuclear'

It's pronounced "nuke - lee - are"

George W says "nuke - you - lar"

Listen to him or many newscasters...

My point? No one seems to care about good grammar, here, there, or anywhere...

Since we are on the subject, it is an all TOO common error.

I took care of a family member, who has since died, of Fred Thompson while he was still senator of Tennessee. It was a lazy Saturday afternoon and he came to the desk to ask about the patient. I looked up and did one of those double takes. After giving him a bit of info on the patient, I did shake his hand and tell him it was nice to meet him, etc. I was amazed and a bit annoyed by the others on the unit talking to him about the movies he had made. One asked how it was to work with Sean Connery. For some reason, I always thought it was rude to talk to one actor about another, more famous one.

My mom literally ran into Al Gore several years ago while he was still our senator. They were both turning a corner, headed in opposite directions. She said he was taller than she expected.

Hungry hungry HIPPA. Hungry hungry HIPPA.

Sorry. I had to sing a little late night song to myself!

In addition to the HIPAA concerns regarding patient confidentiality I would also think that our professional code of ethics would prevent us from identifying former patients in a forum such as this (celebrity or not).

Just a thought.

I've taken care of some local media celebrities when I worked trauma, like a guy who murdered a teacher and got shot by the police, a guy who stole a car and ran a red light decapitating an innocent bystander, a guy who went crazy and starting shooting at a local tourist attraction and got shot by the police, nice people like that. :D

I see nothing wrong with saying on a message board a name of a celeb. However, it we told intimate details like diagnoisis, condition, etc., or if one was currently taking care of a celeb., that would be different. But to say "I took care of celebrity so and so" is no biggie. I realize HIPAA has us paranoid and all, so it's best to be silent.

Some celebrities and non-celebrities may not want it known that they were hospitalized for any reason. This is one of the cornerstones of the right to privacy. If a patient has authorized their name to be released in a public forum that is one thing but I personally would be very careful here and be mindful of such things.
