Have you ever received an award for nursing?

Nurses General Nursing

Like a Daisy Award or Nurse of the year. Was it unexpected? Did you appreciate or believe you were deserving of the award?  Did it come with pressure or your 12hrs as nurse never change?

Specializes in CAPA RN, ED RN.

I chair a Shared Governance/Practice Council group for my unit. Recently we were awarded a national honor of being the best Shared Governance group for the nation-wide hospital system in which we work. We are engaged and successfully tackle many issues so it felt good to be recognized for what we actually do.

This indirectly impacted my pay since our hospital has a professional nursing ladder in which I participate. The award was included (among other things) in calculating a substantial yearly bonus.

Imagine our surprise when not one, not two, but five Daisy Award nominations came in from patients as well as a handful of compliment cards. I guess this nurse has good customer service but does that matter when their actions are prolonging hospital stays? I recently found out why this nurse keeps getting award nominations and comment cards. They were observed by another nurse at handoff to have a pocket full of Daisy Award nomination forms and was handing them out to each patient. I was disgusted and I felt like that cheapened the recognition.

So funny! The same was suspected of a nurse I know who got a lot of Daisies!
Our hospital also has hero awards. But patients/families have to donate money to the hospital in order to nominate a nurse/doctor/whoever. ? I am embarrassed that money was donated for me to get an award—I won’t wear any pins given to nurse of excellence nominees either! I also don’t usually wear hospital logo apparel (just one T-shirt to the gym because I like the saying and only a small Iogo). And no-never would I be in promotional photos. My work place has its issues but it is better than the competition.

Specializes in Private Duty Pediatrics.

Yeah, those promotional photos will brand you to that hospital. Not a good thing, in my view. Cyberbullies can more easily dox you and pressure your hospital to fire you. My friends know I'm a nurse, but I do not identify where I work.

Hey, I can be a great nurse and still be harmed. Antivaxxers, anti-maskers, and others, can come down hard.

I haven't been subjected to that hate, but I know some who have . . .

Specializes in Paediatric, oncology, AOD nursing.

I recieved Australian of the year local hero in 2006 for services to nursing in relation to the arrest and conviction of Dr Jayant Patel in Bundaberg Australia. I also was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for services to nursing, the Pride of Australia for courage and the Queenslander of the year local hero regional. I spent my year trying to highlight  and improve patient safety in Australia

Toni, you absolutely deserved every accolade you received for calling out this”doctor”. He destroyed many lives with his incompetency and arrogance and I have always admired you for your bravery and advocating for both the patient and your staff. ?

My smart mouth and RBF preclude me from winning awards. I'm just not all sunshine and rainbows and smiles.

LOVE it. Me, too.
