Have you ever been insulted for what you do?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello. Another post actually influenced me to start this thread. The OP was a psych nurse like myself and she actually posted something that was recently said to me. I was having a conversation with a nurse friend of mine (CCU nurse, I really admire her, she's a brillant nurse) we we're having "medical talk." In the midst of convo she says, "You actually do know real nurse stuff (laughs)." I just laughed and said, "I am a REAL NURSE, duuuuh." It's not the first time I've encountered this insinuation that us "psych nurses" aren't as smart as other nurses. Another "psych nurse" comment I hear often is, "Wow, you work in psych? You know eventually psych nurses end up crazy like their patients." I could go on and on about this. I feel each speciality requires a special person to do the job well, and you must have knowledge in different areas to perform most specialities, not just in your specific area. When I worked in MedSurg I encountered psych patients, so I needed some knowledge on mental illness. Now that I work in mental health, many of my clients have a range of other diseases that are not mental in origin, but physical, so I must be prepared to care for these things as well. I think people assume psych is really easy, but I know that many people couldn't handle this career (especially because my clients are off their medications because I work in research, so you can imagine some of the issues we deal with. The police know the nurses by name, due to high flight risks, attacks on themselves or others. We literally have to be trained in self defense.) Anyhow, I'm going towards left field here, LoL! Any others heard some insulting remarks, or misconcepcions about their particular speciality? :nurse:

I often get:

"Ewww, I can't imagine wiping someone's butt. That's gross. I don't know how you can handle it"

"I couldn't work in a hospital. It's a nasty, germy place. I can't imagine being surrounded by sick people all day".

It sucks when your whole profession is reduced to something that maybe takes 10 minutes out of the 12 working hours.

I don't even enage anymore I just say with a smile:

"With time, you can get used to anything" which is true.

Specializes in LTC.

Kudos to the psych nurses!! I get enough limited psych at my LTC facility to know that I am NOT suited for that--I have huge respect for you guys!

CJCsoon - Beautifully put. For the same reason that when I am involved in committees at church, hire for my business, whatever, I pick folks that have skills that shore up my weaknesses. I have no need OR desire to be all things to all people. But I'm smart enough to know that if we play to all of our strengths, together we have a better chance of succeeding in the mission at hand.

So, my question is...................which specialty is "Real Nursing"? Which unit in a hospital or outside of the hospital practices the most "Real Nursing Stuff"? If we were to put our foot down and demand only "Real Nurses" use the title "Nurse" at all, what would the criteria be?

I don't have an answer. I think I know what people mean when they say "Real Nursing", but I bet if I told them to describe it we'd disagree on more than a few points.

For me, believe it or not, I think the "Politicians" have it all figured out. See, we all come from the same background, and then extend out in different directions as our career advances. Like nursing, politics offer a great many places you can land, many dividing lines (Democrat, Republican, Senator, President, VP, Mayor, Governor so on so forth). You never hear the President beat his chest and tell a Governor or Mayor..........."Eh, thats not real politics" though. Maybe the answer is not to attach so much pride and importance to the "Nurse" title, at least not to the point where we are telling other nurses they aren't "real".

How does what you wrote here jive with what you wrote in your other thread? I forget the title of that newly started thread ... "Part II" about the nursing profession ... where you essentially say that people are not "real nurses" unless they are staff nurses doing direct patient care?

It seems to me that you are still working these issues through in your mind -- which is perfectly OK. But be aware of how these 2 threads relate to each other.

Does it count if one's sister said that she was a "fake nurse". I should have told her "well, you're a real idiot". :smokin

Yes...right here on allnurses. The most recent "Ok,why do ER nurses think they are so cool" This type of stereotyping whether it be ER, ICU, MS, Psych, L&D, OR, LTC, Education.....is just plain stupid to be blunt. With any group in any profession you will find the good, and bad......to make such broad sweeping statements because one may have had problems with a few in any area (ER,LTC,ICU etc) makes me question the intelligence of the one making the statement. So...do what you love, do it with pride, and never let anyone make you feel inferior, because they need to feel superior by putting you down. :)

I don't really care if anyone thinks I'm a "real" nurse or not, as long as I get a real paycheck! :)

Specializes in School Nursing.

I get this type statement often as a school nurse. My very own PCP even did it once...she asked me where I was working these days and I told her an elementary school. Her reply? "Boring!" I laughed out loud, then proceeded to give her a run down of my most recent day which included 4 caths, 2 blood glucose checks and insulin injections, plus ketone monitoring because the kid was high and I couldn't reach mom, a nebulizer treatment for a severe asthmatic, and another asthmatic wheezing his hiney off with no med to treat him because mom still had not brought me his inhaler and the med permit, plus 6 scheduled po meds for various kids, all the random playground injuries and bellyaches, a sub teacher who fell and injured her wrist, shot records to enter for 100 new PK kids before the deadline, plus careplans to be developed, vision and hearing screenings to do so the teachers could refer the students for special services, and I still needed to make some phone calls to try and obtain medical care for the homeless non-US citizen student who needs to see a specialist. She was shocked and apologized for her assumption.

Bottom line, there is not "easy" nursing job, we all have our challenges to deal with. If you have RN or LVN behind your name, you are a REAL nurse and don't let any fool with a superiority complex take that away from you!

I get insulted when I attempt to explain the health care side of issues; seeing as most of the insults are online, it's not like I'll run into these people. It's amazing how people forget there's another person on the other side of the screen. When I mention I'm in nursing school, they make comments like, "Well I guess the standards have dropped."
