Hi

I have heard mixed reviews regarding Sutter Hospitals. From strike nursing to high paying contingent nursing. Has anyone worked at Sutters as a traveler, strike nurse or contigent?

thank you

I definately understand your hesitation. I have passed up on offers to go to certain hospitals because they have a reputation of floating every 4 hours. It doesnt seem safe. Im also ICU and I know we can get up to 2 pts and if your short staffed I have seen nurses get 3 pts. So getting floated every 4 hours is a nightmare. I've had friends who have had this experience and have since left those hospitals. Because of the confusion that it can cause between patients. Or establishing relationships between pts and families then having to leave and start all over. It was frustrating. But on a good note, I hear alot of nice stories about the views and sites in SF, Im hoping to go there one day. Would you ever consider returning to Marin?

Hospitals in CA have strict patient/nurse ratios...having more than 2 pts at a time should never happen!

Also, most if not all Sutter facilities are going to 8 hr shifts only, including travelers.

I've done 5 contracts with Alta Bates, Oakland and 2 with Ashby (which is their Berkeley location). I've worked 1 strike with them...pm me if you want particulars. I'd be happy to share...just not publicly. I care not to have all the commentary. I work ICU.

Hmm….it's hard to give an opinion of a huge hospital system such as Sutter; You're probably better off critiquing individual Sutter hospitals vs the entire system as a whole. One bad apple doesn't mean they're all the same….. I've worked for two Sutter hospitals in Northern California as a travel nurse-- one was incredible, the other, not so much. I usually go into any travel contract with the mindset that if it's terrible, I'm gone after 13 weeks, and for the terrible Sutter assignment, I did just that. The other, I extended my assignment three times and met some great people, including my husband. :D

Good luck with whatever you decide, and remember, you can do almost anything in 13 weeks.

I just completed a travel assignment at Mills Peninsula hospital in Burlingame CA, on LD unit. They are Sutter and the first time I've work for that organization. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed my assignment! The staff was awesome, pts were great, docs great... Hospital seemed organized enough, no floating experienced or heard of while there, and they ensured staffing was always appropriate, offered OT fairly, treated travelers great, etc. I would gladly take another Sutter assignment to see if this experience holds true for the other Sutter hospitals.

Also in some Sutter facilities, they work eight hour shifts while the travelers are 12 hours. Therefore, I can see how the float-after-4-hours could occur.

The staff still works 12 hr shifts...all of the travelers are 8 hrs.

I have worked at Sutter Auburn Faith in Auburn CA as a traveler. This is a small hospital in Northern CA. The pay was decent, but nothing to write home about. They are very poorly managed. Nothing else significant stands out to me. If I needed a job, I would probably go back. I don't know if that helps, but that's my 2 cents.

Thank you flexiseal, bluntforcetrauma, dchicurn, applern4, carcam75,zacarias and Ersupertramp for all of your positive and insightful comments regarding Sutter. And I agree AppleRN4, its only 13 weeks , I can tolerate an assignment for 13 weeks and move in. I have had some good travel assignments where you feel like your license is screaming and in great danger and some pleasant travel assignments where I have extended.

Great suggestion AppleRN regarding critiquing individual Sutter hospitals. And as far as meeting your husband while on assignment. CONGRATS!!!!! Wonderful happy ending:up:

You are asking for info related to a post from a year and a half ago so that poster may or may not respond. If you ask what information you want, you might get some! For example, if you simply want the agency name, it is probably Fastaff.

I'd like warn you as a new member not to post your email address on public forums. There are many bots trolling the internet sucking up all email addresses to sell to spammers. That is the least harm that can come from posting your email address - lots of unwanted advertisements in your inbox. Things can get darker if someone fixates on you - you can get a lot of information about you simply starting from an email address.

While you don't have PM privileges yet (I think 15 forum posts are required first), that is the best way to contact members privately, especially when they may never see your posts.

I am thinking about applying to Mills Peninsula in Burlingame. I'm so happy to hear that they are such a great hospital. I'm also an L&D nurse so this has really helped my decision. Thank you!!
