I tried to take ENG 102 online a couple years ago and ended up having to drop it because I overcommitted myself with work/school/other stuff. I don't know if the course has changed or not but part of the regular length class involved reading a novel and writing a literary analysis on it (as well as all the other papers you have to do - 102 is the Research Paper English class!). If you took the accelerated class, you at least got out of having to read the novel.
I ended up taking 102 through Rio but I took it as a 6 week accelerated course and actually went to the Rio building in Tempe one night a week for the class. It involved a literary analysis of a short story, and the research paper (proposal, interview, annotated bibliography, draft, final paper). If you have time to take it that way, it's not *easy* when you have a lot of other stuff on your plate but at least it's over *quickly*.
Hope that helped!

I took it at Rio and didn't think it was too bad. I recommend it if you are the type that can buckle down and do the work on schedule.

It was very easy and I would take that a million times over then to have to take all these Bio pre req's lol...I had a very hard time taking teh sciences online through them...just sayin'

I just finished it in November. I didn't think it was bad at all. I took it along with Dev Psychology and Sociolgy and I didn't feel overwhelmed with the writing or anything. I got an 89 so not bad but like I said I took it with two other major reading and writing intensive classes. It sounds worse than it is really!

I took English 102 through Rio last year and found the class to be very easy. Just be prepared to do a lot of writing. One of the main components of the class is reading a novel and then doing a detailed literary analysis. The class walks you through it step by step, so as long as you keep up with the process it should be no problem to complete the final paper. Just don't let yourself get behind. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and wound up getting an A.

This is an update on English 102 at Rio for 2012 they have change class. They have changed the book for the class so you can either buy or read it for free online. The main components of the class is understanding Aristolean appeal which ethos, logos, and pathos. You are required to review a couple of adds and note how they use those appeals. Secondly you have to do an analysis on a prominent speaker such as Teddy Roosevelt or Martin Luther king and note how they use those appeals in their speech to draw in the audience. Third there is annotated bibliography which is easy. And last you start the process for your research paper is no longer a 12-14 paper it is down to 8-10 pages now. Overall it is not a bad class you just have to hunker down and get the assignments done. I will have to retake the class due to the death of my brother and my mother in the hospital with heart problems so my grade went from 98% to an F just to many assignment to get caught back up along with my other demanding classes also it is way too late to drop the class. Anywho, I hope this information helps anyone who is looking to take online at Rio. Just stay on track with the assignments and you will do GREAT!!!
