Has anyone left school nursing? If so did you regret it?

This is my forth year as a school nurse. The first year it was great! Awesome schedule, autonomy, summers off! I was an OR nurse so not having to take call was great. That being said it wasn't a year later that I started to miss the OR. Don't get me wrong, the school job is ok but I hate the 5 day workweek. As a mom of two school aged kids I have zero time to keep up on the mom duties of house and home. So my weekend is tied up getting everything done and not enjoying it with my family. I can tell you right now if it wasn't for the summer off I would not have chosen this field. I def do it for the schedule. I do not enjoy being the " tag your it factor" when anything and everything arises. Not so much the medical emergencies but when it's deciding how urgent. Should I have mom take to doctor or call rescue etc.

dont get me wrong I know the grass isn't always greener, i wouldn't have left if it was perfect right.

i just can't shake the feeling of looking for something better. Thinking if I could make the same money working 3 days would it be a good switch. I wouldn't have the whole summer off but a lot of days to spend with my kids. Also when they get older and don't want to be with mom anymore....I def don't need the whole summer off. I want to add my husband is a teacher so he is off so childcare is not an issue.

Looking to see if anyone else has felt like this and if you left did you regret it? I know school nurse jobs are hard to get so I don't want to give it up until I'm sure.

Yes I have left school nursing 3x's and keep coming back like a dog with its tail tucked between its legs. I also struggle with working five days a week and trying to get everything done on my two days off. I feel like I never really get a day off. It's very difficult getting my kids and myself to dental and dr appts because I can only go after 4pm. Also the pay is low, I miss using my technical skills often and miss working with other nurses. It gets so old so quickly dealing with frequent flyers, silly issues, and made to feel as if my job is so easy a monkey could do it. I actually enjoy the hospital and 12 hr shifts.

However, there are things about this job I love. I love that it's not usually life and death every day. That's a lot less stress I don't miss. I enjoy being in charge of my own office and I'm the one in charge of what gets done that day. I don't have to worry that the aide didn't do the bed bath or if another nurse can cover my other patients while I hang blood for 30 min. I love that I get to see my kids (and husband if he's off) every single eve. There were many times working 3 12's I'd not see my kids for three days straight other than to say goodnight if I made it home before they were asleep. They really struggled with this esp if their dad was working 12's as well. I love that I'm off every holiday and don't have to worry about missing out on things. I love that if it snows a lot I don't have to risk my life driving to work. (We live in the country so it takes a while before our roads get cleared.) I also enjoy getting 2 months off in the summer to relax and recharge and hang out with my kids. I also love developing relationships with the students and knowing when they're really sick or just need some extra attention. The schools are fun during holidays, concerts, etc. It's not all serious all the time. I sleep well every night not worrying how big my patient load will be the next day and my knees and feet are so much happier that I'm not on them for 12 hrs at a time.

So I'm staying this time for good. I've learned that every job has its good and bad points. You just have to decide which has the ones you can live with the easiest. I only work 200 days a year. I can put up with a lot for that many days off. I've learned I need to keep challenging myself so I got my national certification. I'm trying to decide what my next goal is. I've also learned to find things outside of work that I enjoy and not rely only on my job to make me happy and fulfilled.

And here I though you were describing me... ;)
