I received a flyer from a close friend of mine regarding Western Governor's University. I've never heard of this program before but am interested in their BSN program. But how legitimate is this program? Anyone ever heard of it or attended any of the nursing programs there? I consider myself an excellent self directed learner and since a majority of this program is online (other than the clinicals) I feel this program would be ideal for me. THanks!
It is singularly the hardest thing I have ever done because the course content (Competency Based Program remember) makes sure you have a firm grasp of each subject. If WGU says you need 15-20 hours a week for course work, plan on spending 30. Your education is so much better than what the brick and mortars are teaching, I promise! I initially enrolled in their RN-MSN but just applied to another university only because I wanted a specialty not offered at WGU. When Loyola looked at my curriculum, THEY were impressed. I had no problem with the graduate process at another university. Cake Walk!
WGU is accredited by both the college accreditation agency AND the CCNE, I don't understand why people are concerned about the education.
When you insult a program on a message board, you either got turned down for admission or well.....I can't really think of any other reason why you would insult another program.
EXACTLY what I was thinking!
Sounds like "school envy" to me!
With respect to WGU, I don't know much about the nursing program (except that it's obviously accredited--DUH!), but I know someone who is attending this university for a (second) bachelor's degree in IT. He has shown me some of the class materials, and I can tell you that it is NOT a "diploma mill", unless this term means "extremely complex course requirements, high standards, and tons of proctored exams". (Maybe I just don't know the definition of "diploma mill." )
The class that this person told me about that really stood out to me was an "integrated" science class, that covered more areas of study than I have ever seen on one (proctored) exam. There were questions about genetics, biology, physics, chemistry, geology, and astronomy..and possibly more...all on one test. The syllabus for this class (for ONE class!) was over 125 pages long. I have two college degrees, two certifications (CCRN and CMC), and am halfway through my MSN, and I have NEVER seen a syllabus or heard of a test like that before!
TIME Magazine called WGU "the best university you've never heard of". I think I'll take their opinion over that of a person with obvious "school envy".
This is a general warning page, no where does it say anything about the school in question. When in fact, this school is on the approved page of the state.
so again, where exactly are you finding your information?
Again, im a RN now, i agree you need actual school for bed side care, but im asking about RN to BSN.
Besides, Western does their clinical with Cedar Sinai, a major hospital, so they do have clinicals, so im still lost with where you are finding your information.
yup, they do work with Cedars, in fact that's how i found out about Western!
Darleneisdarlene,
I completed my WGU program in July of this year. Hardest thing I've ever done although I did the whole program in 10 months (NOT recommended!) but you can do it in an accelerated fashion if you need to. I started the graduate program at Loyola this fall and its a cake walk because of my education at WGU. I learned more in that program than I did in the whole ASN program and I'm grateful that I chose them. I would never have gone on to get my MSN if not for the incredible mentors and professors at WGU. I see girls struggling in my master's program and to me its a breeze!
Its a COMPETENCY based program, if you're not COMPETENT in that subject matter, you don't pass. Its completely different from the spoon fed brick and mortar, you have to actually learn the material and show your mastery of the didactic.
Hey SoCalNursingStudent! Nice to see someone else who's hoping to get in to WGU's next cohort! Their program is #1 on my list... lets hope we both get in! Good luck to you! =)
Hi SPJJ Mommy, just curious but have you been able to contact WGU lately? I've been trying to reach my new counselor by phone and email for the past couple of weeks to no avail. Did you get a definite date of when all the items are due? Have you completed your application file? If so, have you gotten any correspondence from them since. All I received is an email receipt of transcripts and a notice that my counselor had changed.
From one mommy to another, this school is high on my list since it makes the most economical sense and I don't mind the online/self study style.

Getting the RN license after they sign off on your application puts you at least at the same level as any other new grad RN. The question may be whether or not you will be as competitive for all of the grad programs you may be considering.
