Has anyone ever had to do all this mess for a job?

Maybe its normal, who knows. I got hired to work per diem in an ICU in Ocala. I was like great, when do I start? Well, they said, we can put you in hospital orientation on Monday but we need you to do a couple of things first...........so a couple of things turns into a COMPLETE physical, done by them. And by complete, I mean they gave me an eye exam, tested my near far and intermediate vision, a complete hearing test for low, moderate and high tones, ear canal exam. A 2 part TB skin test, complete health history, examined all my shot records, my OB records, took my blood pressure in 2 arms, my pulse, and temperature. Wanted to know about all my childhood diseases, ect. Of course they made me pee in a cup for a drug screen. Ok, I think, well that was kind of weird but surely I am done. Nope!! they said, now you go to outpatient and they will draw some blood and do some Xrays. Ok they drew 7 tubes, mostly yellow, to check for all my vaccines in my blood. They also did a complete blood count and complete metabolic profile. I had to take my pants off put a gown on and take 2 chest xrays, one of my back and one of my side. Whoa, surely these people are done.....Nope!! Then I had to come back and go to their Physical therapy center and watch a video on proper lifting, lift 50 or 60 lbs off the ground for them, and sit in this weird muscle chair contraption and push against it while a computer measured the strength in my back. So I passed their strength test thank god, or get this- I would have had to complete strength training before I could work there!! Well I start orientation on Monday and I hope its a little less intense than their "pre-employment process". These people make me feel like I am signing up for the olympics or somethinghttps://allnurses.com/forums/images/smilies/added/bugeyes.gif

Mine was almost as extensive. I had records from school (I'm a new grad) of my titers and TB, so I just had a one-step TB test and the urine test. The urine test was different because I had to take off all my clothes except undies and wear a hospital gown (I guess so I couldn't smuggle any urine in), and she put blue dye into the toilet.

I also had vitals, eye exam, hearing test, flexibility exercises, had to lift 30 and 50lbs from a table to the floor and back again. Definitely most extensive physical I have had done.

I almost wish they'd do that here. I oriented a nurse who said "I can't lift because I have a bad back? When my insurance kicks in I'll have surgery." Sure enough, two days later she's calling in for back pain and making our hospital liable. Of course when they find out the had a pre-existing that she probably lied about, she doesn't have a case.

Guess, you just have to play their game their way if you want the job.

Not only did I have to pee in the cup, I laughed so hard at the Far Side Cartoon that was posted on the door that I totally missed the cup. Talk about embarrassing... :o

Now THAT'S funny.

To the OP..that's awfully intense for a pre employment physical. It makes me think they want to have you absolutely at your best health ...so they can work you to death. Good luck.

i dont understand the need for OB records, i would not provided those....but i would have flunked the hearing any way, lol

That does seem extreme. I would think that's overkill too. Did you ask why they needed these?!

My current job did pretty much everything you describe, except for the chest xray. As Tweety suggested, I think some hospital/employers are going to a more comprehensive pre-employment physical to cut their liabilities from new employees who abuse the system.

Think of it as a free physical. You might want to get copies of all the labs, CXR results, TB test, etc. for your own records, in case end up not staying long term. Could prove useful if you decide this job is not for you and move on, you might only have to pee in (or near, lol) the cup next time.

Good luck on the new job - hope it goes well!

Anyone else hear that comment? Your manager might be interested....
