Hi I applied to Cape Fear's Program for August 2012 term. I know that the application deadline just recently ended, however, I was just wondering if anyone had heard any news through the grapevine about applicant pool/point count?
Hi Jaimeanjules,
Sharon Barrow is doing a class on next sunday the 18th I believe. She charges $35 for the class and her information is on the list passed out at orientation. If you need her info let me know and I'll send you a private message with her number. Also I was looking online at the bookstore to get ISBN numbers for our required books and NUR is no longer up there. Any idea whats up with that? There are some inconsistencies on the textbook list they handed out to us and whats actually available (i.e Medical-Surgical Nursing: Critical Thinking for Collaborative Care isn't out in the 7th ed but Medical-Surgical Nursing: Patient- Centered Collaborative Care is available in 7th ed) which one do they want us to have???
Hey Olliesmommy and jns1220, quick question. Are we allowed to use a calculator for the math test we have the second week of classes? I'm starting my studying now!!! Thanks!
Hello,
You can use a basic $1 store calculator. They do not allow cell phone or scientific calculators. I guess they think we'll store formulas in them.
Congrats to all the new nursing students!!
The student workbook for "Calculating Drug Dosages" by Castillo, at least that's the one 2nd year uses (I like saying 2nd year, WOO-HOO!). I will give you some advice for the math test... know kg to lbs, how to calculate drops per min (gtt/min), basic metric conversions like grams to milligrams to micrograms, insulin units, and Grain (1 grain = 60 mg). Also learn how much of a drug to give per dose, for instance:
MD orders amoxicillin 0.4g PO Q6H. Available: amoxicillin 250mg/5ml
How much to give per dose?
Answer: 8ml per dose
Also know the rules about decimals = NO DANGLING DECIMALS! (.5 mg should be 0.5 mg)
If less than 1ml round to nearest hundreth place (0.666 ml then round to 0.67 ml)
If greater than 1 ml round to nearest tenth (1.68 ml then round to 1.7 ml)
There is usually 8 or so questions on the math test each semester.
