Has anyone been accepted into the Mt. Sac Nursing Program Spring 2009

Published

Has anyone gotten into Mt. Sac's nursing program for Spring 2009? There is an orientation week that starts on Monday. Does anyone have any insights or knows about what will happen during this orientation? I know there's a HESI exam for Tuesday. Do they select the final candidates based on the results or are you in regardless? It's all very exciting!

Is anyone already in the Mt. Sac program or has recently graduated? What's it like? Are the instructors fair? What clinical sites do you go to?

I know that as an LVN student, I've seen Mt. Sac students at Intercommunity Hospital in Covina. Where else do you guys go?

Just curious.

:rollHello everyone. I am also starting the nursing program in the spring at Mt. Sac. Wow! $495 for the books, I thought it was gonna be more like $300. I am excited and scared to start the program. I've been waiting about a year, and can't believe it's here. Math is not one of my great strengths. I've been spending some time every week practicng the basics, as well as conversions, and memorizing the conversion factors. Hopefully it will pay off. Take care

Hello fellow Mt. Sac classmates! :wink2:

I also sent Angie and Maria an e-mail regarding the books and this is what Maria responded:

"The books have arrived and being assembled in their boxes. You should be able to contact the bookstore at Ext. 4475 (Book Info) to see if they are on the shelf. Let me know if there's a problem."

I think that some of these books carry over to other semesters of our program so it shouldn't be too bad. I remember them mentioning this fact during orientation. I will probably go tomorrow or Friday to Mt. Sac and get a list of the books if they're available and post the ISBNs here. It's better to shop around. Also, there are book stipends available but you have to fill out the paperwork in order to qualify. I would do that ASAP.

Hope it helps..!!

P.S. As for the study groups, I think they are going to separate us into mandatory study groups. I want to see how that's gonna work out. :)

Thanks for the info.!

Unfortunately I do not qualify for any financial aid or book stipends since i have bachelors degee already. I only qualify for loans, which I am trying to avoid. Wow! i didn't know they were going to designate us into study groups. That seems pretty intense.

Today was the first day of Pharmacology and I feel overwhelmed already. There's a quiz every day, homework, reading and other activities on blackboard to do.I will have to manage the fast pace since the class is basically shorted to 12 class sessions.

Bella if u have an LVN license would u be doing the bridge program where LVN enters the 2nd year? It seems like u are doing the straight 2 year RN program.

I'm also starting in the Spring 2009 at Mt. Sac with you guys! Good luck to everyone taking the Pharmacology course in the Winter! We'll be rooting for you guys!

As for the books, I only have the 2 ISBNs listed in the information packet given by Mr. Romero. I'm probably going to go to the Mt. Sac bookstore on Friday to try to get the rest of them. Hopefully buying it at different online sources will be a little cheaper.

Again, congratulations on getting accepted everyone and see you in the spring!

Hi Chowder.

It seems that pharmacology is going to be a challenge, right? I didn't want to take it during the winter session because I just finished an intense LVN program and I just feel burned out. I'm not a licensed LVN yet. I am planning on taking the NCLEX-PN in February or March. Technically, I don't have to take the Pharm class because I already passed it for the LVN program but I want to take it to brush up on what I already know and because I really did like Mr. Romero's attitude.

The reason I'm starting out as a beginning nursing student is that there is a 3-4 year wait to get in as an LVN. That is what Angie told me when I was trying to make a decision about what to do. Besides, as an LVN you would come in 2nd semester and not the 3rd semester as most people tend to believe, AND you would have to complete a Bridge program before you start at all. I just thought this was a faster route for me.

It sucks but I really want to be an RN ASAP and this was the way to do it. As an LVN your employment choices are limited and they do everything that an RN does except push IV drugs and all for half an RN's pay. It's just worth it to just go ahead and get your RN degree. The reason I did the LVN program was because I knew it would take a while to get into the nursing program and I was anxious to see what it's like to be a nurse. The experience was well worth it and it makes me that much more determined to finish up my ADN degree.

Thanks for the info.!

I went to the bookstore yesterday before class and was informed that there was no more box available. It seemed that they'd only take reservations (the lady told me that there were reserved boxes waiting to be picked up). Also, I didn't see the individual books there on the shelf. Maybe, they only carry the bundles? I'll probably buy a box from the bookstore anyway. By the way, the box includes the books that we will need for the entire 1st year (plus maybe the first half of the 3rd semester, not sure but someone mentioned this yesterday). So, it's not that bad in my opinion ($500 for 1 year).

The Pharm class is very interesting and Prof.Romero is really funny. Though, he seemed pretty strict. He told us that there was one student who got an overall of 74.9% and he still did not pass the person! You need a 75% or higher. Also, like someone already mentioned, we'd have a quiz every class meeting. There are 2 assignments to complete (one's in the computer and the other's the study manual). He didn't get to finish his powerpoint lecture on Wed (we ran out of time). So, basically we need to do the reading ourselves. Things move really quickly in this class and he doesn't have time to go over every detail. Though, I really like the class and I enjoy listenning to him talking about his experiences. He's one cool professor.

That's interesting about the book reservations, because I just called today and they told me that all nursing book boxes are on the shelf. We can just walk in and buy them; at least that's what she said. I guess $500 isn't too too bad for a year. I just wasn't expecting to pay it all at once. I was thinking more along the lines of paying $200-250 each semester. Oh well. There almost seems no way of ordering the books online since the school is not giving us detailed info about the books. Angie wrote me back and just gave me the list of books without author and without isbn.

Hi Bella!

I think that's excellent that ur an LVN and continuing on to become an RN. I feel ya! I've been wanting to be in RN for a while too. Now that i made it in the program; I want make it count. I want to give it my all. At times I feel frustrated in this pharmacology class and all the other classes hasn't even started yet . This pharmacology class is going to prep me for the next two years cuz I'm feeling the pressure already. I think it takes alot to be a nurse, of course you already know being in the field as an LVN, but it's because we have an opportunity duty, job, or "life changing" challenge that we will face everyday.

"I have nothing to lose but to suceed.":yeah:

ISBN-13: 978-0803619111

Happy book hunting!

Thanks Erin for the last isbn! I just bought this book yesterday for a pretty good deal, I think. I'm not sure what it's going for at the school, but if you all purchase the Davis Drug Guide for Nurses from borders.com you can get a really good deal on it. The original price on borders for this book is $40.95, but if you enter the promotional code of BRW5734X it takes 30% off. The total would be $31.03 with tax and shipping. It's the best deal I could find online. Hope it works for you too! :-) ...Oh, and the 30% offer only lasts until 1/21/09
